Vit d3

Hi there Just bought some vitamin d3 5,000iu tablets, I am taking one a day can I ask how many you take has been googling it and got a bit confused. It also says to take calcium and magnesium at the same time just wondered if you that take it also do. Thanks Amanda

In the winter I have to take 3000iu per day, and then 1000iu in the summer months- which is quite a high dosage ( because I had a vitamin d deficiency). I think you really need to find out if your vitamin D is low ( blood test) and go from there as a specialist will tell you what dosage you should be taking. Vit D is fat-soluble which means your body had a hard time getting rid of it if you take too much, and when you take large amounts your liver produces too much of a chemical called 25(OH) D- and high levels of calcium in your blood ( hypercalcemia).

l get my vitd3 levels checked via B/ham Assays Lab - a postal service. Google vitamin d3 testing.] Just a pin-prick blood spot test. lt is recommended to take magnesium along with Vitd3. as it helps the body absorb calcium - but l do not take calcium as well. Too much calcium causes its own problems - so does Vitd2. Your levels should be between 150/225 nmols. After taking 20,000 ius daily throught winters and 10.000ius summer - l am still just under the 100nmols - 98. Have been having my levels checked every 6months. Shall now leave it for a year. lf you strip off and get out in bright sunshine for 15mins[no suncream] - your body gets 20.000ius. Any more then 15mins you will not absorb anymore - just probably burn.

My GP’s do not know much about vitd3 or MS come to that. They did give me a blood test after lots of badgering - but when the results came back they just said ‘lt was within the right levels’ - and was 15!!! The B/ham Assays Lab test is more comprehensive and they email you the results.

Hi Amanda My mom was told to take Vit D with a glass of full fat milk as the calcium helps to absorb it x
