Very weak arm for driving, please help.

Hello everyone,

I hope you are all having a good morning so far.

I currently drive a hand control car and am finding my left arm is getting weaker and weaker. My arm causes a lot of pain while driving to the point I feel like I can’t hold the knob on the steering wheel which is like a searing shooting pain until I let go. My arm even gets tired when I am drying my hair trying to straighten it.

I would appreciate any advice that may help strengthen my arm so that I have stronger muscles. I really need to drive to work and get around and would hate to lose control over another thing in my life.

Thank you

Love

Hi Martina Have you tried doing any strength exercises? There are ones particularly for the arms, its worth a shot but give them time to work. Good luck if you do try them. Mini x

Could you swap the hand controls over so that the weak left arm was operating the brake/accelerator and the stronger right arm operating the knob on the steering wheel! I have hand controls myself and am sure this would be possible. Also ask if there are any other hand controls that might help make things easier for you. Cheryl:-)

I now no longer drive but when I did I was sent from an assessment at the Ashley Ainsley Hospital in Edinburgh (I’m in Glasgow) there is all sorts of adaptions they can make to a car to enable someone to continue to drive. I’m sure there must be some kind of driving assessment centre near you.

Hi

Am having the same problem since having a relapse on my right arm , havent drove for 2 months, just hopeing my arm keeps improving so am able to drive again soon

Hi guys,

Thank you for replying and sorry for my late reply. I am going to try and do arm exercises every day if I can and see how I get on but I know I am definitely worse if I am attempting to drive somewhere I am not sure of the direction! I will also contact a driving assessment center if my arm does not improve through exercise.

I hope you all have a lovely day.
