Hello to you all.
I’m sorry to bother you lovely people once again for a bit of your very useful advice.
I know the ms has being a bit more problematic of late and I also know I am very grateful to be able to do my bits and bobs still however of late and just on the very odd occasion I have found my right leg a bit slower on the uptake for braking which I then park up and wait until the strength comes back, now it doesn’t completly go otherwise I would not drive at all. I was wondering can you folk guide me in the right direction for possible motability to check me out for aids or even a test to see how I can best improve or keep things as they are. I really need the car as my walking is very much impaired and work, which I want to continue with for as long as.
Thanks for any advice. I have a hospital appointment so will not be on the computer until this evening.

Take a look at these Motability pages and see if they are of any use. A physio might be able to suggest exercises that help improve muscle strength.

Thank you so much for your reply and info. I’ll have a look.

Hello Mary
Feeling that braking is a bit slow caused me to go to a driving assessment centre (Queen Elizabeth Foundation in Surrey). They did a complete range of tests and determined that while my reaction time was a little bit slow, it was within the legal range.
Notwithstanding legality, I decided to have my car adapted for hand controls as I’d never forgive myself if I ran over a child. Or a dog. I had a short go in a hand controlled car in the assessment centre (scary initially).
Then I found a driving instructor to have a few lessons in an adapted car. I only had 3, and the instructor said I hadn’t really needed the last. Then I found a car adaption specialist and had my (already automatic - which it has to be for hand controls) car adapted.
To start with, driving was weird and different. Especially parking. Then I got used to it. I don’t think I’d have driven hundreds of miles with hand controls, but others manage.
A few years later I stopped driving at all due to changes in my physical condition.
It’s definitely worth finding out if you’re road legal and decide for yourself whether you should continue driving a standard car.
