Car hand control adaption

Hello all

I’m new to this site and I must say it all seems very friendly so I’m looking forward to getting to know everyone.

I was dx in 2008 with RRMS. I still drive the 3 miles to & from work and until Christmas didn’t think anything of driving for miles (I recently drove 4 hours to York with my son while he was looking at universities!) . At Christmas, however, I found I was having difficulty - on bad days / after gym workouts, I couldn’t feel the difference between brake & accelerator pedels. So … being proactive, about six weeks ago I had my automatic car adapted to hand controls.

To be honest, I’m still finding it a bit daunting - steering the car with one hand + a thumb is a bit of a worry! I’m fine on the well-worn path to work, but the thought of going further really worrys me! I intend to get back to the gym this week (which I know from past experience will improve the strength in my right leg!) and I’m sure it’s only a question of time and practice, but I wondered if anyone has any experience / tips they could share?

Hi Emma, I have hand controls too. Sounds like you are doing brilliantly with them tbh and also well done on taking the initiative and getting hand controls when you felt things getting worse, rather than waiting until you had maybe had an accident. I think it’s like everything else, it’ll take a bit of getting used to but just persevere, sounds like you are doing great with them. Cheryl:-)
