Has anyone experienced an intermittent throbbing gum?! It is really painful, makes me just want to cup my face and take ibuprofen, but it doesn’t seem to be provoked by any of the obvious dental type triggers like hot/cold food etc (though the bout last night started when I was reading to the kids so maybe that was a trigger). It lasts maybe 10-15min and is really really painful but it’s a bit of my.gum with no tooth in (top wisdom tooth, removed in about 2005!), there’s no swelling or anything that would indicate an abscess or whatever, and when it’s not throbbing anyway, touching the bit that has the pain doesn’t hurt…whenever I google it it’s coming back with atypical trigeminal neuralgia but I’m not totally convinced.
Has anyone had anything similar?! I can’t work out if this is a dental thing or a neurology thing as neither seem to fit the symptoms exactly!
Interested to hear any experiences!
Thanks!
Had a painful upper right gumline, in front and behind the teeth, the other day, lasted about 5(ish) hours. Was trying to figure out what was causing it - couldn’t find any obvious suspects. Is it another weird symptom to add to the list? I don’t know, but will be adding it to my symptom diary as a reminder should it crop up again, also to mention it to my dentist - she might be able to track it down.
Does ibuprofen relieve it? That was the first question my dentist asked when I arrived with something similar. I think they want to know because CNS pain typically does not respond well to conventional pain killers. I wish I could tell you what the happy end of the story was, though, but I can’t because I’m by no means out of the woods yet! (and yes, ibuprofen does relieve it for me)
Good question, I did take ibuprofen but it naturally disappeared both times before the ibuprofen could possibly have kicked in, so I’m none the wiser really! I’m very lucky it’s short lived.
I haven’t been given an MS diagnosis, but I’m awaiting a neurology appointment. Suspect I may have FND.
I have horrible throbbing gums fairly regularly. I went for a dental checkup as I was concerned in case I may be developing gum disease but the dentist said my gums are fine. When I asked what could be causing the pain… “possibly overactive nerves” was the response.
