Thied part insurance for wheelchair users

Hi All,

I have been chatting with another forum user and it occurred to me that I don’t have insurance against third party claims when I am using my wheelchair.

I work in a hospital and am grateful for the obvious benefits that brings.

However I have noticed that I find myself making allowances for people coming out of doors and around corners without looking. I used to look around corners and out of doorways to avoid bumping into people and being knocked off balance. This was because I was using a stick and knew that I could easily fall over.

I have noticed that people without walking issues tend to come around corners and out of doorways full of confidence and without looking first. I guess they are expecting to meet others who are equally able to walk, balance etc. So it is perfectly understandable. I used to feel a bit irked when they would walk straight into my path and then whilst quickly avoiding me comment that I needed ‘L’ plates. I’d laugh it off and think no more of it.

It now occurs to me that were a pedestrian to collide with me in my wheelchair, irrespective of who may be at fault. If they were injured, as they may well be. How would I cope with any subsequent claim against me?

So the question is. Do any other wheelchair users have insurance against third party claims?

I know it is advised for mobility scooter users, but I’ve never seen it mentioned for wheelchair users.

Thank you Pam.

Sounds a good price too. I’ll definitely check it out.

Check your house insurance… U may find you’re already covered for personal liability. Do make sure they understand u r a wheelchair user and even if u r not covered already they may b able to add it on for a small increase in your premium.

Yes, do check your house insurance - as it should cover you for public liability.

oh yes, of course. If only my brain was working along the right lines!

Thanks you

Sid

I use fish and it’s £57 a year for full cover for an electric chair.

Had a search on the net and found Blue Badge insurance for a manual chair was £24 for a year.

Hiya Sid, just to let you know my G-Lite Pro wheelchair has just arrived this minute! Fingers crossed it’s easier than the one I’ve got at the mo.
