the care crisis

Hello all.

I am a retired member of Unison. I retired from work 20 years ago, due to disability. I still get a monthly newsletter from Unison.

I have just read the latest and my word! is it depressing!. There are several pages on Crisis in care. I expect you dont need me to explain the situation, eh?

My hubby cared for me alone for the first 11 years…he was on CA…about 35p an hour it was back then…and he was 50…lots of working years were lost due to me needing care.

9 years on and Ive had carers coming in over those years. I still have 1 of the original women..shes a diamond…truly she is.

I`ve been through a few others and they all had one thing in common…they CARED! But there has been not 1 penny pay rise in all that time…even though I am now contributing quite a bit myself…carers dont get it…the council does.

I want to express my gratitude to all you carers out there…I know a lot of you do it unpaid.

Some people say, Well why shouldnt spouses care for each other with no pay? What about in sickness and in health?

Well the answer to that is…being on a much reduced income, with high cost bills, very often the increase in water, electricity, gas and other outgoings due to disability…make a difficult life even more difficult.

Thankyou…thankyou…thankyou.

Bouds xx
