Tai chi & MS ??

I Did taoist tai chi for a couple of years, I found the instructors very frustrating they kept trying to tell me how to balance, even though they new I was a dance teacher, and did tai boxing for years, I know how to balance and transfer weight, you just don’t understand why I can’t do it, and if I can’t do it properly what’s the point? They also made me feel like I wasn’t trying hard enough, just let them feel like we do for one day then see if they feel the same, lol sorry it did piss me off. Lol

i think this is the cause of ms fatigue - we spend our lives trying really hard (far harder than most people try).

no wonder we need a lie down!

I go to yoga and my teacher is very understanding. She even fetches a chair for me and for some of the postures needing a wide stride she shows me how to do them perched on a chair so I don’t spend all my energy focused on trying to stay balanced rather than trying to do the posture. Maybe you should try a new tai chi class and see if you can find a more understanding instructor - you may have just been unlucky with the previous one?

I am seeing a physio now and she thinks my leg pain, after I have walked for 20 minutes or so, is caused by my leg muscles constantly compensating for my poor balance with every step I take. She encouraged me to make more use of my stick rather than waiting for the fatigue and discomfort to begin. I thought that, by the time I finally got to the top of her list, there would be little she could do for me but the balance exercises she has given me have been surprisingly helpful and even though I didn’t think I was improving, she can see the results. The pain is reducing and I have been a bit less wobbly when I’m out so I think I am finally beginning to notice some improvement for myself. I think my stick may be a permanent feature though :frowning:

Definitely try a new instructor. Mine is really understanding and will provide a chair so I have something to grab when I lose my balance! My class seems to be mostly for people with varying problems - MS, arthritis, hypermobility…we’re a bunch of crocks!! But I can honestly say it’s helped me.

I do Zumba and have had to adapt the moves to stay upright. Spinning around is definitely out now. Luckily the teacher is very understanding and supportive - makes all the difference

thanks for comments, but apart from the annoying instruction, being an ex dance teacher, i quickly understood how it should be done properly and why, knowing my legs wont allow me to do it the way i need to, I feel like a weight trainer using to much weight and swinging it, thinking they look good, but are in fact only going to hurt there back, sorry was a bit of an anorak in everything I did if its worth doing!!!
