Hi don’t know if anyone else has had this problem, but sometimes when I am eating i seem to get something stuck in my throat and end up coughing and coughing it can go on for a minute before I can get loose what is stuck in my throat, is this anything to do with MS
Hi
Swallowing problems can be caused by MS. I’m not sure what department it is that can help with it, but if you speak to your MS nurse or GP they’ll be able to refer you to the right people.
Hope you get the right help soon though, it doen’t sound like the most pleasant experience to have!

Hi, I got some advice from the Speech & Language Therapist regarding swallowing which has been really useful. She even came out to the house and put a stethoscope to my throat while I was swallowing so she could hear what was going on, then explained it to me so I could understand her advice. Heather
Hi not so much swallowing but when l brush my teeth it often makes me reach sometime making me sick, l did tell the ms nurse she said she would get bake to me in my next opp next month take care regards Jan
I saw a speech and language therapist for my swollowing problems. She gave me some excercises to do and a list of foods to try and avoid (dry crumbly foods are worst).
I have problems swallowing too and I have found that small bites of food and with a drink usually helps. I find now that unless a bite of food already has sauce I need a bit of liquid to help it all go down. Its that or I live off soup. Mind you that might help my diet (which is currently going backwards)

I’ve been referred to speech & language therapy too for swallowing problems, but I’m still waiting for a date. Everyone else with swallowing problems seems to get things stuck or choke, but I seem to forget how to swallow - it is like my brain just stops me swallowing mid swallow (if that makes sense). Fine normally, but not if you have hot food in your throat at the time, which then burns you. Am I the only one with this problem?
Me too! Food or drink sometimes just holds in my mouth and doesn’t go down. Then it makes me aware I’m not swallowing and then it feels like I try too hard to swallow and can’t. I keep my rheumatologist up to date when this happens and eat more slowly and carefully in small pieces and drink in sips. Sometimes it isn’t about food or drink it just happens and can be very frightening. I’ve learnt to relax through it knowing it will return - Thankfully so far it always has. I have had this problem on and off for about 10 years
