Problems with swallowing.

Hi Not sure if this is down to my ms but lately I have been finding it difficult to swallow. For example when I take my tablets before bed I put them in my mouth, take a drink then try to swallow but nothing happens! I’m willing myself to do so and more times than not I end up choking. I find this would happen with food as well - it’s like I’m giving the command but no one is there to carry it out! Should i mention this to my ms nurse? Steph

Hi Steph I quite often find this happens to me more so if I’m really thirsty . . . I’ll glup a load of drink down n then if I need to take a pill after the initial drink I find its like the worker has left their post so there’s no1 there to flick the “time to swallow” switch lol As u say u will ur brain to remember how to carry out this seemingly simple command but it just forgets "/ I’m not dx yet but from the info that I’ve read it seems it could be a known MS. symptom Lou

Any issues with swallowing should be reported. I would be asking for a referral to speech and language as they are the whizz kids with any swallowing issues.

Even if it is only some of the time they will give you tools for the tool box so you know what to do when it is bad.

Please do not underestimate the importance of your difficulties being assessed.

Pip

I went to a speech and language therapist and she gave me some pointers and excercises to to to help with swallowing…worked a treat!

so it another ‘gift’ from my ms how lovely! Anyone know what the gift return procedure is?
