How many people suffer with this? It’s a recently new thing (im suspected MS at the moment). I have noticed that food is taking a while to go down and keeps getting stuck. The other night I was eating and the food became lodged so i took a drink to try and force it down. This didn’t work and I ended up really choking, the pop was coming out of my nose. Was a horrid horrid feeling, I really panicked. Is there anything to do to ease this?
Thanks
Hi hun. I was out with my staff
(carers), for a christmas treat last week, when I choked on a brussell sprout…the whole restaurant heard me and looked on. It took a while to dislodge. I had tears streaming down my face, ruining my make-up!
Yes, it is really frightening.
There are therapists who work in speech and swallowing, so ring your GP for a referral, eh?
luv Pollx
My mother has secondary progressive ms. Now at the age of 42 I am being investigated also. I remember being a very young girl and my mother suffering with this. She self diagnosed herself with having a hernia. We were talking about this very thing over xmas. I think women have a tendency to fob things of.
I am not dx, but have been having problems with food getting stuck for about 6 weeks now. I can swallow ok, but as soon as the food starts going down it gets stuck and sits there, causing indigestion and heartburn. I have taken to sleeping sitting up slightly, which has helped, but it is really starting to get me down, so I really do sympathise. I’m lucky enough not to be having a problem with actually choking, though, so am better off than most.
I struggle with swallowing, I now eat and chew smaller amounts when I eat and avoid talking at the same time, it really has helped. Sometimes I have the urge just to swallow and I start but cannot finish the motion of swallow, its this that frightens me.
I have tried eating smaller bits of food too in the hope that it might help a little. It was really frightening. I can’t believe how many things can be attributed to MS. Poll that sounds horrible too, at least I was at home and only my husband there…who carried on playing on his PS3 might I add!! Purpledot I am also ok with swallowing but the food just sits there sort of at the bottom of my throat, it’s quite a new symptom though. Ruby 32, good luck with your investigations.
I have my MRI on 6th jan and neuro on 9th jan…I know I am probably hoping for too much but after 2 years of symptoms and a diagnosis of epilepsy after a seizure at work, by letter in august with no follow up at all, I am hoping to get an actual diagnosis.
