Swallowing problems

Good afternoon all, When I relapse it can sometimes include slurred speech and swallowing problems, so much so that my throat & Oesophagus feel tight. This usually passes but this time it’s got so bad I’m substituting food with Complain. Firstly does anyone else get throat tightness or reflux symptoms when they relapse? The doctor said this is probably related to my MS but I could try omeprazole, although is not sure if I can take this whilst taking Tysabri - does anyone else take this at the same time as Tysabri? Any advice would be gratefully received. Taz

Hi Taz, you should ask GP or neuro to refer you to speech therapist. They are very good at helping you deal with both speech and swallowing issues. Lots of MSers get referred with good results.

Give it a go. I know it’s a horrid problem.

Thanks for your wise advice Pat. I had speech therapy following my first episode about 18 months ago and it did help, but I had to wait for nearly 2 months, which is frustrating because I needed them when I was at my worst and by the time I had my appointment things had improved. On the positive side they did give me some good advice which I can draw on when I’m having a relapse. However, I’m not sure if the ongoing problems I’m having are related to the MS or its a separate issue and therefore need to take omeprazole for reflux…it’s all very confusing & upsetting. Thanks Strudders, I also suffer with choking at night; I seem to choke on my own saliva, it’s very scary as I wake up gasping & coughing. My speech therapist did mention something about ‘swallow function’ tests but I had improved at that time so he said its something we could consider if I have further episodes. It is scary isn’t it but still good to hear that you have some techniques to help when this happens - I think I will be asking for an assessment. Once again, thanks for this useful information. Taz
