Stress free place to live?

Yorkshire is lovely.I lived in Settle and Ingleton and wish I hadnt moved.

I found the good folk of Milton Keynes to be very friendly.

I think the fact that the majority are ā€˜incomers’ may account for this.

Well MK was initially very wheelchair friendly, the cycle paths useful forvw/c as well, no buildings over 6 storeys high all with lifts, does the development corporation still exist? had loads of ground floor accessible accomodation (purpose built) must say, not been for years, but apart from Akrotiri,my favourite place tto live, t hen it was for being so child friendly but I can imagine it being very w/c friendly, if the redways aren’t overgrown and have more CCTV. Devlopment corporation used to be red hot on repairs etc, used to give you a list of timescales and reduce t he rent if t hey we ere missed! also liked all the co-operative ventures shops, garages etc. so you did not have to buy tools to use just once! maybe they’ve gone, but they had inspection pits-the works! my dentist opened from 7am to 9pm,catering for working peoples hours, it was a brilliant place to live but I’m going back 30 years!

Hi Dan, wow! a shining yorkshire example…great to hear it` s so good!

Thanks to everybody for their comments. Definitely a minefield this location search.

Now, all i need to do is find an appropriate organisation to help me with the paperwork.

Anybody who i can talk to about the rules and regulations needed about relocating from one area to another.

My search for a property has reduced my search to the same county i currently reside in. Less stress to

stay close to where i am.

My local borough council told me if i want to live in another part of the country then i should win the lottery.

Very helpful. Not!

why do you want to move? I`ve forgotten your initial post!!!

My reason for moving is simple.

I live in a one room rented terraced house with 2 smokers. Staircase and bathroom are not accessible. I would love to have a hot bath.

I need somewhere that is quiet and pollution free, new change a scenery. Not an easy thing to do.

Below are some drawbacks with finding a new place to live.

  1. Councils will not help you because you make yourself homeless.

  2. You have to live in the area for 3 years to be allowed on the housing list in a new location.

  3. Housing lists is very long in the UK. Very little chance of getting a compatible house in first 5 years.

  4. Private rentals are very expensive if you are on benefits. Hard to find private disabled properties.

  5. Government benefits are being cut.

  6. Living in a council house or estate is not stress free.

Conclusion:

I need to save as much money as possible and find an appropriate property in the same county i live in now. I live in warwickshire.

Id love to have a bath too. Wet room is great but sinking the whole body into a bath would be heavenly. Don’t think I’ve had one for many years.

I need to win the lottery to get a bath and a wet room. That’s all.

I miss having a soak in a bath too.

Good luck with the move when it happens.

A thought… .as your current home is unsuitable, surely your council would give you priority?

Hi. I live in Calne in Wiltshire. Surrounded by beautiful countryside, easy access to Bath via Chippenham train station. Easy access to London again by train. A really friendly community. House prices are good. There is a development here called Curzon Park which is all bungalows. They are really nice and spacious. I originally come from Southampton and moving to Wiltshire is the best thing I have done

A bath would be wonderful. Wet rooms are ok, but a lovely soak in a bath would be lovely.

My council are helpful in certain ways. They will help me adapt a property if i own it, which i don’t.

They have put me as a priority on the housing list. Should take about 3 years.

I am not disabled enough to be put at the top of the list. Adapted properties are only really available through the council.

Private rented properties are rare to find and are expensive when you find one, so… i now know where to move to, I am saving like crazy, exercising like crazy so i can keep my MS monster at bay.

Hopefully when the right property in the right area becomes available i can pounce.

I prefer Shower…(sorry…)…

A showers with a good head which massages your body is a good stress reliever. A bath is good for soaking your saw muscles and a wet room for everyday washing. All 3 are need for your peace of mind.

I find the head the hardest thing. It just drains my strength.

A lottery win would be nice as well. A lot of money would be nice, but i would be happy with a small amount.

Take care.

Hello all

I live in a village near to Lincoln. I moved here 9 years ago from Surrey when I needed a bungalow and prices were too much down south. I think it was the best thing me and my husband ever did. We both love Lincolnshire so much. I’m living the stress free life at last. The hospital is really good for my MS and my husband’s Crohns and we have very good Consultants looking after us.

Hello Frances,

Lincolnshire was on my shortlist. I have given up on the council as you have to have been living there for a minimum of 3 years. Definitely not me.

As i already live in Warwickshire i have been forced to stay in Warwickshire if i want social housing. I do not have the funds to buy a property outright. I suppose there are worse places than Warwickshire.

Stratford-on-Avon, Leamington Spa, or Warwick. Not bad places to live.

the village near Lincoln sounds ideal.

so glad your move was a positive one.

Lovely, lovely, places. I’ve been to them all. None cheap of course. But beautiful, stress free countryside. If you can find an accessible, affordable, preferably future-proof house in Warwickshire, then I’d be content with that. Or just an affordable, accessible place, from which to out wait your turn on the housing list!!

Oh Frances! you set me off searching again! We lived in Lincolnshire for a while, huubby still in contact with ex collagues, so had a look and have found perfection, something I like as much as this one! maybe we should sell to HS2 after all!, that is why I have been looking, don’t want to move for any other reason! but once HS2 have demolished half of the village will it still have the same atmosphere? I don’t think so! I don’t fancy all the noise and mess during the prep and construction, best get this valued!
