Bernie, l have had to use a stair-lift for about 30yrs. First one was a secondhand Stannah - lasted 20yrs. Since then l have replaced it with a Meditek stairlift. l use a ‘family firm’ father and son - who service and repair. Central Stairlifts based in Worcestershire. So do look for an independant company. The last stairlift l had fitted cost me about £1,200 -
Love my stairlift - l keep a rollator at the top of the stairs so l can get to the bedrooms safer. And leave another at the bottom. Grandchildren love granny’s stairlift. And of course my rollator and scooter.
i would use a local ‘family’ firm. the first one i got i was ripped off with 3 yrs ago it was a reconditioned one from ACORN it cost £1600 ?? it was always noisy from the start it packed in after 3 yrs so i got a local family firm out and he has just fit a new one for £1400.

Hi, some years ago…my m-i-l came to live with us and we got a stair lift put in. We got it on a disabled facilities grant from the council. It cost a whopping £4k!!! It had to be bespoke made for a curvy staircase.
Hope you dont have to pay anything like that. But have you enquired about a DGF?

Go local/independent.
Just be careful that your local firm is not just an agent for Acorn or Stannah, picking up a commission for passing your enquiry on. Ideally, a genuine local firm will have a showroom and workshop.
Then ask where the service engineers are based - my “local” engineer is over 28 miles away, and frequently they have come from as far as 100 miles.
And, if you do decide to go with one of the big two - haggle over the price. That £5000+ lift can often come down nearer to £3000 if you offer a bit of buyer resistance.

The grant is means tested and I don’t think I would qualify.
