Recurrent UTIs and prevention with D-mannose

Read an interesting snippet in the New Scientist

'Most UTIs are caused by escheria coli which use their hair-like pili to bind to carbohydrates on cell surfaces. But now researchers have found if you give people carbohydrates similar to those naturally found on cells, they act as decoys, and [e-coli are much less likely to] get a grip on the cell surfaces. As a result the bacteria get flushed out when people urinate. In a small trial of women with recurrent UTIs just 15% of those given the simple carbohydrate D-mannose got a UTI within 6 months, compared to 20 % of those treated with antibiotics and 61 % of the women given a placebo. In another trial, women who drank a solution of D-mannose didnt get another UTI for more than 6 months compared with 52 days for those given anitbiotics.

In the case of antibiotics, I assume it means people kept on a regular low dose.

Anybody tried this D-mannose? Presume you dont need a prescription.

Also, I got a visit from a continence nurse at home on Friday without even requesting one (I am not in any way immobile), although they did ring to book an appointment time. Anybody else met with such a pro-active approach?

Hi Bob

Yes, D-Mannose is supposed to help prevent UTIs. So many people do take it as a supplement. You can get it on line or I should think from healthfood shops. So no prescription is needed.

I’ve taken it, but I’m not especially prone to UTIs so gave up partly because it’s quite expensive.
