Hi had an MRI on Monday. My GP requested this. I have not seen neurolgist this time. The question is 'who looks at the MRI my GP or a neurologist ? Also my GP phoned on Thursday saying test clear I dont know if she means MRI or blood test I have asked her to phone me but as yet I havent heard from her. Does MRI results usually come back so quickly. I had MRI Monday afternoon and she phoned Thursday morning. Thanks again for your support
Hi Cam,
I’m guessing it’s the blood test that has come back. Call me cynical, but it does seem a bit of a fast turnaround for the MRI. It’s not that the pictures have to be sent off for developing - they’re ready more-or-less straight away - but as you’ve hinted, they DO need specialist review and interpretation. That won’t be left to your GP, so I’ll be very surprised if it’s already been done, AND typed up, and sent to your GP, all in less than four working days!
The scan is usually reviewed initially by a radiologist. They write a report, highlighting any abnormalities, and I suppose then send it to whoever commissioned the scan, which in this case would be your GP. It’s relatively unusual for the request to come from a GP, rather than a neuro, but I don’t think there’s anything wrong with your GP taking the initiative - quite the opposite. Otherwise you might have waited weeks to see the neuro, and only then be sent for a scan.
I guess what happens next depends on the radiology report. If it’s definitely found an anomaly, your GP might be able to get you an earlier neuro appointment than would otherwise be the case.
So she seems to be quite proactive, and handling it quite well, at the moment. Seems like you’ve got a good GP!

Thank you for your reply. And yes I havefinally found a GP who actually listened, requested all past reports over the yrs that this has been going on. I thought as you did that it was a very quick result, unless of course she called in some favours I course I don’t want it to be MS but I would like to know whats wrong.
Hi Had a phone call from GP today and it was MRI result and she says they are clear. This is great!! but where do I go from here?? I’m still getting symptoms MRI clear so its not MS. What now??.. limboland again
A clear MRI does not mean that there is nothing going on as many neurological conditions do not have obvious signs that can be seen on MRI. The neuro will make a decision based on your clinical exam, symptoms and the clear MRI. If there are still things in the running, then there may be other tests that are needed. If the neuro doesn’t think it’s a neurological problem, then he/she may recommend another speciality to try next. Do ask if they don’t suggest!

Hi Karen thanks for reply. I haven’t seen a neurologist for 12+k yrs. I went back to drs because health was getting worse. Dr requested MRI and she had results superfast 4 days and phoned me to say its all fine. I asked what next and she said there’s no easy answer and it was left at that. I’m thinking of getting a copy of results as from past experience Dr dont always tell u everything. Any ideas will be great. Thanks again
Don’t let the GP rule out anything serious because of a clear MRI. Many genetic, metabolic, neuromuscular, etc, and neurological conditions do not show anything on MRI. Which specialist to see is a tricky one though. Hopefully the GP will have some ideas. (I would be making wild guesses, which might take you in completely the wrong direction!)

So you’re saying its worth seeing neurologist?? I’m glad I asked because I would have decided that as nothing showed up on MRI that a neurologist wouldn’t be interested. I’ll try and push for an appointment. ps I’ve been saying from the start of all this that I’m sure its something todo with my neck but nobody has taken any notice.
Thanks again
I’m not saying it should be a neurologist necessarily - just that a clear MRI does not mean that nothing’s wrong. Best to speak to your GP about where to go next.
(GPs are pressed for time so when a patient’s test results come back clear, some of them have a tendency to assume that that’s the end of the matter unless the patient reminds them that they still have all these unexplained symptoms and that they still want to find out what’s causing them and get some help.)
Kx
Thank you for your time answering questions. Will make appintment to see GP cheers
