Hi everyone
i hope someone can help, I’m frightened, I’ve had MS for 16 years but have done well on Rebif had a couple of episodes but for a few days I’ve had a real tight sensation in my throat like I’m being strangled so I’ve just tried to ignore it I can eat and drink normal with it, since yesterday my vision is jumpy and all my left side has had strange sensations including my face arm and leg and I feel totally wacked so drained
Is this a relapse? That’s what I’m worried about…
Thankyou for reading x
Hi, it does sound like a relapse. Best thing is to speak to your MS nurse and maybe see if you can see your neuro.

It does sound as if there might be something new going on. Best contact your MS nurse, I think. Even if you are. It in enough trouble even to consider steroids, it is best that your advisers know what’s happening.

I can’t help with the relapse or not question but I can relate to the feeling of being strangled and tightness in the throat very much. Mine started in 1997 and it was put down to all sorts, acid reflux, anxiety etc, all a load of rubbish in my opinion I have always thought it a symptom of MS, it was dreadful to live with you have my sympathies mine was there to varying degrees for about 18 months then disappeared so hope it disappears for you too, please don’t despair thinking it may be long lasting as it may go just as quickly as it arrived, but you do get used to it and manage it somehow. Always see your GP though , hope you get some relief soon.

Hello Princess
It sounds like a relapse and a fairly nasty one. If your throat is tight, your eyes are suffering what could be optic neuritis, one side is affected worse than the other and you have bad fatigue, it sounds just like a relapse. Possibly one that’s bad enough to take some steroids.
I should do two things. First get a urine sample to your GP surgery tomorrow. Even if you don’t have UTI symptoms, it’s important to rule one out, especially if you think you may take steroids. Phone the GP reception, explain that you have what seems like a relapse and need to rule out a UTI. They should be OK with testing for that.
Second, get hold of your MS nurse. If you can’t (or don’t have one), arrange with your surgery to speak to a GP.
Take the advice offered to you, but do consider taking a course of oral steroids. If you catch a relapse early enough, they can work wonders. Obviously, they aren’t reliable and sometimes don’t help, but with any relapse that’s affecting your eyes or mobility, they are worth considering. The side effects can be nasty, so if you get a prescription, ask for a 'script for Omeprazole as well, that will help protect your stomach. You could also get something to help with sleeping as steroids are a bugger for messing with your sleep. (Even a herbal medication.)
You could also be speaking to your MS nurse or neurologist about maybe thinking about changing your disease modifying drug. It’s possible that after years on Rebif, it’s just not doing as well to prevent relapses as you need.
Best of luck.
Sue

good luck hun. I have been quite unwell lately with my PPMS, and have had a ton of blood tests (waiting results), UTI clear. I have my own sticks and check just in case. if its dodgy then i know and send sample to doctor.
the thing is with MS an exacerbation can be so bad it can feel like a relapse so dont panic just yet. I have several RRMS friends who have been poorly with this weird weather, changes in humidity constantly high, high pressure through thunder, the list has been very varied.
so lets hope its just something which can be controlled, if not steroids will soon sort it out. big hugs oh and welcome. xxxxx

Yes I was thinking the weather I’m sweating a lot lately too but it’s so humid I think, I’m just a bit all over the place, this throat pressure is horrible though wish it would go away, I’ll speak to my GP, MS nurse hard to get hold of I know their really busy so I’ll see what GP suggests and ask for steroids if needed (hopefully not) speak soon and take care xxxx
I get the tightness in my throat, not nice, so I sympathise, as well as speaking to your nurse, it might be wise to check out whether you’ve got a urine infection, my nurse always advises me to do this first, whatever you decide good luck, x x
