More details

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a neurological condition which affects around 100,000 people in the UK. Most people are diagnosed between the ages of 20-40, but it can affect younger and older people too. Roughly three times as many women have MS as men.

Describing MS pain:

If you can describe pain well, both to health professionals and those around you, there is more chance it can be managed.

Sensations change, so try to describe the level at which they affect you. For example, a tingling in the hand may sometimes be a niggling inconvenience, or it might make holding things difficult or very painful.

When describing it, use whatever words seem best, even if they seem odd. Some words people use to describe pain:

Squeezing or crushing
Cold
Hot or burning
Sharp
Dull
Like ants under my skin or ‘creepy crawlies’
Like a build up of pressure
Stabbing
Creeping
Like an electric shock
Aching
Pins and needles

What is Sativex?

Sativex is a peppermint-flavoured mouth spray that comes in a small pump that you can carry with you. This pump delivers a precise amount of medicine every time you spray it.

The medicine in Sativex is extracted from cannabis plants that have been selected and grown to produce a constant amount of active ingredients. Sativex is the first cannabis-based medicine to be licensed in the UK.

Sativex is made under strictly controlled laboratory conditions and contains a balance of these active ingredients that have been shown to help improve the symptoms of MS spasticity.

Treatment with Sativex must be initiated and supervised by a physician with specialist expertise in treating MS. http://sativex.co.uk/patients-and-carers/sativex/what-is-sativex/

Sativex can be taken in conjunction with other medications and does not negate your current ones

The NHS in Wales is first in the UK to fund a cannabis-based medicine for people with multiple sclerosis. Wales NHS to offer MS cannabis drug Sativex - BBC News

Sativex is being studied in the UK as an add-on treatment for brain cancer. Previous studies have also suggested benefits in treating arthritis and neuropathic pain.
