Palpitations Are Driving Me Mad

Hi everyone, hope you are all doing as well as we can.

I’ve got yet another UTI. Only had my last one 6 months ago so we think that the last lot of antibiotics didn’t actually kill of the last UTI.

My hubby called an ambulance yesterday as the room was spinning and I had terrible palpitations. 2 lovely paramedics came and did an ECG which was normal thank goodness. I didn’t have to go to hospital as the palps eased once I’d been reassured by the ECG. They both said that UTIs can cause palps which made me feel better.

Anyone else had the palps with their UTI? They are so horrible.

Take care.

Yes I did once. Also had them when I had a reaction to iv steroids and lack of sleep for almost 72 hours! Serious enough to warrant observation on the cardiac unit and injections to reduce my heart rate. Not an experience I’d care to repeat.

Thanks Poppy and Val.

Yes they are very frightening. I am gonna have a chat with my GP about them if they don’t ease.

Horrible feeling.

Take care.

Hi Shazzie

I had palpitations with an overactive thyroid as well. When they first started it frightened the hell out of me. I was on beta blockers for a few years to stop them. (I had an operation to correct thyroid, it’s now under active which is much more manageable.)

I’ve not had them with a UTI though. (Although I too have a flipping UTI!)

I’ve got a few cheap bits of medical kit, such as a blood pressure cuff/monitor, a pulse/oxygen meter (the thing you stick your finger into) and a thermometer. I also test my own wee for UTIs. So if I had a symptom that was new or frightening, I’d check all of those things. Sometimes it helps just knowing you’re probably not about to die.

I’ve used the pulse reader to check that I wasn’t having palpitations when I started to have a sort of inner trembling, it felt like my heart was racing, so knowing the pulse was normal helped.

I hope your UTI goes away soon. I assume the GPs have sent your specimen to the lab to ensure the correct antibiotics have been prescribed?

Awww Sue. Sorry you have a UTI too. What a pain.

Yes my GP has sent a sample to the lab. Got to ring after 1pm to get results.

I’ll mention to GP about thyroid, although I have regular bloods and I’m sure she told me recently that my thyroid was ok. I will check it out again though.

Thanks for your reply Sue and I hope you feel better soon.

Thanks Carole.

Yes they really are a pain.

I am going over the top to be extremely clean and use bacterial scrubs whenever I was my hands. There’s no way I could be any more careful.

Over the last month, my pulse rate has been very high, and the doctors can’t find a reason for it. It ranges from 18 to 117 and at one point was 140 and I had to go to hospital xxx

I wore a heart monitor for two days not long ago due to palpitations. It seems that the spikes were at the same time as the pain spiking, even when I was asleep and it woke me up, it was the pain waking me up but the heart went bananas. Now if it happens I know what it is so can cope with it, cup of tea, breathing exercises, open window to let the air in, meditation, heart rate back down, big pain killers all back to normal around 20 mins later- whatever normal is! It was a bit scary when it started happening and it would make me nearly be sick. Sometimes I find only going outside in the air and sitting and breathing will bring it down to normal. I think the neighbours probably think I’m barmy outside in my nightie, taking pills, breathing slow, looking at the stars.

I haven’t had a UTI since last year, they really are a nuisance.

Has your gone now?
