Some nights I wake up in so much pain in my legs, they feel stiff and painful, even my hip aches and I can hardly move my legs, then my arm hurts too, and hands are dead, which makes it hard to open a tablet to take (diazepam), to help me get back to sleep again.
IT is happening more and more.
Very oddly I had the best day ever at the beginning of the week, I had a great nights sleep with nothing almost slept through the night which is totally rare, and a great day. Then yesterday, left foot was pins and needles and I felt awful all day , then last night BLAM, leg pains and a bad nights sleep. I eventually got up at 5.30 to just try and stretch and walk about to ease the pain.
Thought at first it was my mattress so 2 years ago I bought a new bed, but it has not made any difference, and its happening more and more.
So fed up of it. I can cope with pain when awake as i can do things, but at night just lay there wanting to scream.
I have/had this too and was prescribed amitriptyline to aid this. It has deffo helped, still get it a little. Occasionally I find that standing eases it, easier said then done at 3am when I am a wheelchair user!!
Hi, I also get this and have also been perscribed amitriptyline. I take 1x 10mg tablet every night. But when I am having a worse time of it (at the moment) I can take 2x 20mg tablets. The amitriptyline has helped me alot. It did’nt work straight away as it takes a little time to get into your system. With me it took around three weeks to take effect and did make me a little more sleepy first thing in the morning for the first couple of weeks. But I stuck with it and now would’nt be without it. It’s worth asking your MS Nurse (if you have one?), Neuro or your GP. Good luck. Rob E.
Yes i get this quite often, i find if i do not get to sleep quick enough the pain starts kicking in. My right leg and foot feels like it has been put in a freezer. My hips start to ache and feels like they have been put in a giant vice. My calve and foot feels like its doing cartwheels The only thing i have been prescibed is pregabalin.
This morning i felt like i did not have ms and so far it has been the best day i have had for years.
Hi Chocorange, sorry I should have said. I used to take it at night but now take it at around 6-6.30pm. I don’t feel sleepy from it in the mornings now. Just a bit MS sleepy most of the time!!! Rocket, amitriptyline is an anti-depression drug when used in a higher dose (around 50-80mg a day?) Well, that’s what I was told by my MS Nurse. In the lower dose that I take it works as a Neuro relaxant type thing I think? It just takes the edge off the pain, but my hands and feet sometimes still feel like their not mine. But getting the pain toned down helps me sleep so feel alot better throughout the following day. Check with your Doc for use with other drugs/treatments. Rob
My ms nurse recommended to be on anti depressant, my doctor gave me citriplam but i did not get on with it. I just booked an appointment and will ask him about amitriptyline. Thanks Rob and chocorange she just said the same
Hello goldengirl You have my sympathy. I used to dread going to bed, due to pain from arthritis. I take topiramate now at night for headaches/migraine. Combined with my other meds…I’m out for the count Have a word with your gp and see if he can prescribe anything for you. Can you relate it to anything you do, during the day. Just thinking, my joint pain gets worse when I do too much. Hope things improve
Hi golden girl, I too have suffered for years with this pain & legs even don’t like being touched once this pain starts & I agree it’s miserable. I have had respite from it the last few months & put it down to coming off Rebif but unfortunately it came back this week hence coming on the forum to get advice!! I’m already on pregablin, amitriptyline & slow release dihydocodeine so guess my only course will be to increase the pregablin or amitriptyline. I think you should definitely go back to your doctor/nurse & hopefully they can recommend a cocktail which works for you. Good luck
Thanks Judy and others, yes I am going back to doctor, i had a miserable night again, the pain was wretched, like my leg had been torn off literally it wakes me up near screaming.
I think i may be coming down with a cold (I rarely get them), so perhaps this is why its kicking off.
Trouble is i have tried all the MS drugs, Amy, Preg, and others and they make me feel rank and dizzy and tired, so i try not to take them but i think i will have to go back to amytrip again for some sleep.
Thanks for caring guys/gals. Big hugs. (not the MS kind lol). xx Maria
Hi Maria. I get a lot of leg pain at night and during the day. I have Amy, but not a huge fan so don’t take it often. My MS nurse has recommended Gabapentin so I’m starting that next week. I hope you find something that works for you. Karen xxx
