Tonight I have just come back from the local Walk-In Centre, having been reassured that I have not got a DVT in my right calf! The pain an tightness has steadily increased over the last 5 days and it is now difficult to walk. Since diagnosed five years ago with MS, my main symptoms have been numbness left hand side, really bad fatigue and general clumsiness with my hands. This is the first time I have experienced pain in this way, so I thought it might be non-MS related. My right lower leg feels tight and burns. Anyone else have anything like this?
Hi there, Yep, tightness and pain in the calf muscles is really common with MS, sorry to say. For me, it’s been one of the earliest and most permanent symptoms. I’m the other way round to you: I’d been to the doc’s with what I feared was thrombosis BEFORE I was ever investigated for MS. The doctor couldn’t find anything wrong, and sent me home with a bit of a ticking off. I wasn’t diagnosed for at least another couple of years - it might have been four or five. But the doctor, as soon as she heard the news, remembered, and said: “You had that thing with your leg, didn’t you?” I don’t bear a grudge over it, but I think she was quite upset. Since diagnosis, I take Baclofen for the calf stiffness, although it’s beginning to be less effective. I’m not sure if this is because I’ve developed a tolerance to it, or the stiffness is worse, or a combination of both. If you don’t take it already, might be worth enquiring about. Also regular calf stretches can help. Tina
