Operation

Hi all.

I normally reside in limbo part of forum as I am undx, but possibly have ppms…

Last friday I had major surgery, a hysterectomy, and I’m recovering (surgically) fine. But my neuro stuff especially the ‘inside buzzy/jelly’ like feeling, especially after a bit of exercise have been hugely exacerbated!! I only need to walk in the kitchen and back and have the same feeling that I had before the op after walking around a supermarket (which is normally a struggle for me).

Does anyone have experiences of having a major op and the after effects?? I think the thing thats worrying me as I don’t have relapses, so therefore no remissions, is this body getting completely wiped after a short trip to the kitchen going to stay?? Or will that get better??

Thanks for any advice

Jx

Hi Jules, hope you soon recover from your op. I had my hysterectomy 10 years ago and imediately after started having problems with my bladder. Initially I thought it was an after effect of the op but after all the usaual tests they decided it was a symptom of my MS. A nd it has never improved since then infact its probably got worse.

Jules its only been a week I would like to think and hope it would improve. In the meantime just take things really easy I struggled for quite a while. If I remember correctly they reckon recovery is at least eight weeks

Thanks Kim,

8 weeks!! Jeeez!!

Yes, my husband keeps telling me it’s only been a week, he keeps telling me to stop worrying as it’s probably my body concentrating on healing and lets see how I am in 6 weeks before I start worrying… If only it was easy not to worry!! lol!

oh I remember it so well but Jules you will soon feel better but for now just let everyone look after you. I dont know your reasons for having it but the good thing about it is no more monthly monsters. I went through quite a few years of hell before practically begging the doctors to do an Hysterectomy, best thing I could of done. Did they give you a hormone implant?

Kim

I had a thing called adenomyosis, or something like that! Basically the lining of my womb decided to moved to the outside of the womb… sounds nice doesn’t it!! It caused a not nice time!! Glad its done and definitely looking forward to no more ‘monthly monsters!’ lol. I still have my ovaries so for the time being no hormones needed. My consultant said I’ve got good 8/9 years left in them yet.

Sounds complicated and havent heard of it before. Where abouts are you with your dx how long you been having symptoms??

About 6 years in total… neuro has got it down to either HSP or PPMS but as my MRI & LP are clear I can’t be diagnosed, but he has dx spastic parapesis in my legs. He’s told me I may never know which one of the two I have!!

A general anaesthetic can hang around in the body, liver I think, for up to a couple of months. An immune system that is already under strain has to cope with this too, so it is little wonder you are not feeling great.
I had a minor op under a general and couldn’t understnad why, a few weeks later i was still feeling awful. My MS nurse explained why and how long it could take to finally clear up.
Needless to say she was right.

Anything that puts more stress on the immune system is going to have an adverse effect, especially a major op such as the one you have recently had.
I hope it all clear up soon.

Hi hun. Well a week is nowhere near enough time for you to regain some strength, even if you didnt have PPMS or HSP. I had a hysterectomy in the last century!!! Actually it was 1984, when I was 31.

I know surgery and pain relief etc have come on leaps and bounds since the dark ages, but even so, it took me a long time to feel well and strong again. it was almost a year tbh! Dont let that put you off, eh?

You really need to give yourself more time and please dont beat yourself up about it. Your body has had major trauma and needs a complete rest. By that I diot mean take to your bed for months and months. You need to try to keep your legs moving, even if it is only circling your ankles…can you still do that?

Take it steady, yeh?

much love, Polly xx

Thanks Paul and Polly.

I am begining to realise why all the doctors kept tellimg me because of my condition I will take longer to recover, I wondered what they meant… will my stitches take long to heal?? huh! Thats what I thought!! But now it makes sense!! My body will need time to get over what it has been through…

Thanks again!
