Hello all.

Hi, I was rushed into hospital two years ago and had major surgery after being diagnosed with a perforated bowel. Approx 4 weeks after I had a relapse. Not sure if this was because of the surgery or maybe because I was on Avonex injections at the time and my neuro told me not to inject for at least 6 weeks after surgery. So if you are on any sort of dmd it might be advisable if you checked whether you should refrain.

Hi,

I had major neurosurgery nearly 3 years ago to fix a broken neck that was compressing my spinal cord at C3-5 as a result of a horse accident and I didn’t suffer any ill effects as regards to my MS as a result of the op.

I’ve not heard of the need to stop DMDs because of surgery before. Do you know why he told you that? It just seems odd and very likely to increase your risk of a relapse.

All the best for your op and I hope things go very well for you. I recovered really well and you would never know now that I was millimetres away from being a C3 quad

Laparoscopic surgery for Right Inguinal Hernia - in one afternoon, out the next morning; no probs.
Went in with enough medication to cover several days, which I had to hand over, and which was then given back to me at the correct times.Mind you, this was private, not NHS

Hi brog64, he told me to stop the Avonex because he said it would prevent me healing quicker. They tried to do a laparoscopy but I ended up having my stomach cut from top to bottom then ended up back in hospital a week later with infection x.

Oooh Nanny McPhee, that sounds gruesome

Glad you have recovered OK now. The relapse was probably due to the infection you mentioned. Infection is notorious for causing what is called a pseudo-relpase which means all the sympotoms of a relapse but caused by reasons such as infection, over-heating or over-tiredness. Pseudo meaning that the symptoms go away as soon as the offending cause is removed. But sometimes with infection it can then turn into a full on genuine relapse and last even once the infection is brought under control. So in your case it was probably more this that caused your relapse rather than the actual surgery… bummer though
