need advice please- a symptom

Hello Everyone,

I don’t have MS. However, 2 years ago I had been experiencing tingling, nerve pain and was hence refered to a neurlogist. The MRI came back normal.

However, I had lower back pain all of last week, just normal back pain was sudden but mild . I planned to see the doctor about it once my exams we’re over. However, for the past two days it’s gotten worse. My lower back still hurts , but I feel a strange burning sensation throughout my whole back and tingling feeling and sometimes it feel like a nerve maybe pinched? I don’t know. The burning is almost always there. It’s very irritating, uncomfortable and painful. It’s very hard to fall asleep. I don’t know if this is neurological pain, however there is nothing I can do to make it better. Pain killers don’t help. I have a doctors appointment tomorrow, need some advice please on what I can do until then? Does anyone have anyone idea as to why this maybe happening? The only reason I am posting this here is the last time I had symptoms like this the doctor refered me to a neurlogist. It’s very hard to go on about every day life like this, any advice is really appreciated. I am 22 and otherwise healthy.

Thanks so much in advance.

Hi Anon,

You’ve done the best thing by making an appt to see your GP.

In the interim period have you tried anything like a muscle rub or a heat pack? It might help take the edge of your lower back pain.

As to what could be causing it, well it could be anything. Have you ever injured your back? Do you have other symptoms?

When you see your GP tomorrow make sure you tell him all of your symptoms, it may be that he decides to refer you back to a neuro but on the other hand he may refer you to orthopaedics or a rheumy. Either way definitely ask him for some pain relief.

Good luck

Burning pain is normally neurological, but there are lots of possible causes so, if the GP can’t find a structural reason for it (like a trapped nerve), you should certainly be seeing a neurologist to get to the bottom of it.

The best non-medication treatment for burning for me is ice packs although some people find that heat pads work better. The trick is to distract the brain from the fake signals with real signals. One of these may be enough to allow you to get some sleep at least.

I hope the appointment with the GP goes well. If you feel that you are being dismissed without any help, make sure that you tell them about the previous episode and that this is really troubling you; that you need help.
