I’m new to all this. I was diagnosed with RR back in June last year. I notified the DVLA and this week received a letter saying I was under medical review. The letter is rather vague and doesn’t really explain what this means but from reading some similar posts do I gather that my licence is now permanently a medical one until they DVLA decide otherwise?
Hi, I was diagnosed with RRMS last July and contacted DVLA as soon as my MS nurse advised me to do so. I got a similar letter then a few weeks later my license arrived and yes my license is now set for a further review in 3 years.
It will be a medical one permanently.
I had a 3 year license when diagnosed, renewed again for 3 years and again for 3 years. I suspect it’ll get renewed for 3 years when my current one expires.
I have just got my 3 year renewal licence back. My last one expired in June last year but due to covid etc etc etc they’ve taken until now to get me a renewal.
Whilst you are waiting for them to review it you should still be able to drive under section 88 of the Road Traffic Act. You must ensure you haven’t been told by a Dr that you mustn’t drive and you must ensure you meet all necessary criteria such as eyesight.
If it is going to take a while you might need to complete a D1 form which you can get from a Post Office or of you can get through to them from the DVLA directly.
It’s a little bit of a pain due to having to re-do it every three years but when DVLA is all working fine and long as your MSis under control it doesn’t take long.
For me the most annoying part is that for MS you can’t renew online. You can for other medical conditions, age or after 10 years (photocard licences only last 10 years) but not for MS.
Just let me clarify my above post a little bit.
You should be able to drive under Sec 88 RTA whilst your licence is still in date. Should it not be renewed before it expires then you can still drive under Sec88 RTA as long as you have submitted a D1 form.
A D1 form covers you under Sec 88 RTA for 1 year so if it takes longer than that you need to complete another D1.

Like all the other guys have said its a permanent 3 year license.
Apart from my MS I was also told I have sleep Apnea which you have to tell the DVLA about which they ask for two reports regarding my MS and Sleep Apnea every 3 years.
I drive with hand controls so far ok.
