My first holiday in a long time - going to Rome. By myself. Any tips/advice much appreciated.

Hi,

I’m going to Rome on march 1st until 7th of march. Have booked my flights. I’ll be going on my own.

I want to travel alone as I want to see places I’ve read about for years. It’s been a long time dream of mine.

I thought that now is the time. My family have said: “that’s very brave of you.”

I’m not scared. Haven’t booked accommodation yet but have tried to use my brain and realized I can use the numerous metro stops to get around with a travel pass. This will save on walking. It will definitely be a mind over matter at times - as my legs aren’t as strong and I do get tired and the shaking begins ! lol

My dillemma is that it takes a lot longer for me to get ready and to get up and then there will be times I will want to come back to sleep during the day and take it easy. I want to pace myself.

I would love to hear any advice you guys may have for me and if you know of any friendly accommodation in and around Rome.? It would be very difficult if I tried to get back to the place of bed during the day and found myself locked out. How could I explain my predicament and would they understand?

Thank you for any help you could give me. I don’t smoke or drink and am very clean. Any help would be wonderful and of course I would pay anyone who could put me up somewhere quiet and safe.

Either way - I’m going. And only a direct meteorite hit will stop me.

I’ll be going for 6 nights.

Thank you

Robert Kelly.

Lucky you. I suggest you use the tourist buses, a ticket lasts all day and you can hop on and off when it takes your fancy. Have fun.

Thank you. !

Another great tip.

All the best

Hi Robert,

First of all, good for you. Rome is fantastic.

I went in 2010, I went with Cresta which was great because they organised tonnes of excursions. I did an excursion every day which was either a morning or an afternoon, which would be great for you as you could either rest before or come home and have a rest at lunch time. They also pick you up from your hotel and drop you back to your hotel. This way I got to see far more than if I navigated myself with an expert telling me all about it! And I still had most afternoons to go back somewhere or see something I wanted to see.

I stayed at the Hotel Columbia. This is only about a 2minute walk to the metro and contrary to everything I’d heard “don’t stay near the metro” I never felt unsafe. The hotel was fairly small and basic but everything you could need and quite typical of a hotel in Rome.

I hope this helps and that you have an amazing trip!

Thank you Emma,

I will look into Cresta and thank you for your advice. It does sound ideal. I managed to get a return flight for £100 to rome and back to Dublin.

I was pleased with that. But there are Soooo many accommodation options. I did see a little B&B outside Battisti district - right next to a metro. The rooms did look lovely. But it’s the flexibility I need. To go back whenever I want to and have peace and quiet to recover.

I’m bringing my IPad with me - to keep in touch with friends/family through skype. So I’m making sure there is WIFI available.

It sounds like you had a lovely time. Would you go back again by yourself?

Hi Robert,

That sounds like a great deal! I know that the hotel I stayed in had wifi and as it’s so close to the metro it was ideal. It’s also about a 10/15 minute walk to the main sights like the colloseum, tomb of the unknown soldier, forums etc.

I didn’t have any symptoms at the time (and I still don’t have a diagnosis) and I didn’t go alone so it was a bit different but I would totally go again! There is quite a lot of walking and hills though so just making sure you get plenty of rest as well as sight seeing would be fine : )
