MS and severe back pain

I had an allergic reaction to an antibiotic called Metronidazole when I was 17/18. This antibiotic is know to cause ‘neurological aggravation’ and I believe the lesions in my central nervous system have been caused by this drug. My MS diagnosis was made in 2001. I cycled 2700 miles last year and have done approx 200 spin classes etc in the gym, I look after myself well! I had a lower back/lumbar MRI in 2017 and it found multiple spinal injuries which would have been from 7 car accidents in my 20’s/ early 30’s. Is there anyone else on this site who thinks their MS diagnosis is wrong? I was medicated with Gabapentin and SSRI antidepressants for 11 years. It’s impossible to tell the difference between side effects and symptoms of MS!

Well, this isn’t a professional opinion, but I’ve spent years now going to sleep with a hot water bottle on my lower back, and I recently got a large electric heating pad that I use sometimes during the day. I’ve found that it’s very important to vary how I lay in bed and to switch chairs multiple times during the day.

Once in a while, it actually helps to walk around briefly, and while I do have heat sensitivity, sometimes a long shower with an intense spray on the achy parts helps temporarily.

I use a backless stool in the kitchen, a hard desk chair when I’m typing, and a comfy arm chair while watching TV. I also spend part of the day laying in bed, either reading or watching TV. Sometimes I’m on my right side, sometimes the left, and frequently on my back (which I actually hate) because I seem to get the most relief that way. I also have 8 pillows on the bed that I rearrange according to my needs at the time.

When the pain is really bad, I take a couple aspirin and rub the sore areas with a hot/cold liniment (I don’t know what they’re called in the UK).

If you try a heating pad, be aware that they can get VERY hot. Mine turns off after 2 hours and has adjustable heat settings, but the highest ones could be dangerous for someone with extensive nerve damage.

I have mild arthritis in both my hips and was starting to experience pain after sleeping on either side, while using an innerspring mattress I’ve had for years. First, off my girlfriend, an RN, suggested that I try sleeping with a pillow between my legs. This helped reduce the intensity of the pain, but I still would wake up several times each night from dull aches.

I decided to try a foam mattress but was finding most online were $500 or $1000 and even more. I was thinking I’d have to pay that amount of money to sleep better and though it was a lot, it would be worth it.

Then I found this mattress listed on the results and read many reviews buyers had made. They were as good or better than mattresses costing four times as much. I decided to try it out.

I’d have to say it really surpassed my expectations. I now sleep with almost no pain, with or without the pillow (they included a pillow with the mattress which works very well btw). I’m sleeping better than I have for years. I’m very pleased and would recommend this mattress very strongly. The price is great but I’m fully satisfied with the comfort.
