Magnesium

Wonder if any of you have any experience of taking magnesium? I’ve been taking it for a couple of weeks and am suffering terrible tummy pains. During the time I’ve been taking it it’s definitely helped with heavy, jumpy and painful legs. My question is…do any of you know if the side effects stop when you have been taking it for a while? Really don’t want to give up on it but at the moment tummy pains are as bad as leg pains!! Devil and the deep blue come to mind! Hope everyone is doing well. Best wishes to all, Nina x

I take 375mg and find it helps ease problems with spasm & cramp. However, it can act as a laxative in high doses and this might explain your discomfort. Perhaps you could reduce the amount for a while and see if that helps?

Hi Nina,

maybe you are taking too higher a dose, i take 1 x 150mg a night, and it helps with my spasms a lot.

There was a thread on everyday living a few months ago that claimed magnesium oil spray worked rather well and might avoid those nasty side effects. Just a thought.

Thank you both for your replies. I was taking 250mg…so in between you both. I think maybe my best bet is to give it a few more days for my tummy cramps/spasms to settle and try again on a low dose (by the way it wasn’t acting as a laxative in my case, actually quite the reverse) I read up about the oil and I think that’s probably the best route for me. Thank you both, Nina x

Hi Nina, I’ve been on 250 mg for a few weeks. At first I had tummy ache and upset tummy, but it settled down after a few days. Given that your tummy ache lasted much longer I would think it’s best to stop for a while and see if tummy improves. You could then start again on much lower dose and perhaps slowly increase. Have to say I haven’t noticed any improvement in legs or spasms, but it’s early days. Hope tummy improves soon! Pat xx

Thanks Pat, Having googled the oil Whammel mentioned I think I will try that …seems far less likely to cause side effects. Hope it soon starts to help your legs, Nina xx

Sadly, the search facilty doesn’t seem to work terribly well and can’t find the original post, but from memory it was “Better You Magnesium Oil Spray” on Amazon. I am sure there are plenty of others though.

Ordered one today Whammel , thanks. Legs definitely worse without it, hoping it comes tomorrow. Nina

I take the chelated 500mg tablet at night. No strange side effects. I have read that it helps to balance out the high doses of Vitamin D many of us take.

Thank you seenjo, I’ve now started the oil, I’m taking the equivalent of 200 mg a day , I shall increase this if I continue to have no side effects. Nina

I need to correct my earlier post. I don’t take it every night - it’s every other night. I like to mix things up and keep the ‘beast’ guessing.

Thank you, Spray is working well, when I remember to use it…still not fixed into my cotton wool brain! Still no side effects, haven’t increased dose yet…taking it slowly. By the way, mines not a beast…it’s an elf! He’s pretty clever though when it comes to second guessing me! However, I continue to try! Nina

Maybe you can get your elf to wear bells on his pointy shoes…so you’ll know when he’s coming!

Nina

How is the Spray coming along, may try this since everything is a major cost and I also seem to get bad effects as soon as i take anything in oral form

Excellent idea seenjo! I will stitch them on myself! Make life so much easier if we had advance warning, wouldn’t it? Nina

Trish, I’m very pleased with the spray, no side effects so far. I take the equivalent of 200 mg, it’s definitely helping my legs. Struggling to get into a routine with it though as I use it at a different time to all other meds! I got it from Amazon. Nice to use something natural and get a result. Nina

Glad to here it is working I used to use Tablets years ago and gave up when I stopped all meds in a hissy fit and not been back to it. I may give the spray a go and see if I get any improvement.
