Hello, my name is Nicky Dixon and my dad was diagnosed with MS 29years ago. He has been extremely lucky with regards to his mobility and health up until the end of June this year. Over the last 2 and a half months my dad has lost his independence. He was walking by himself with a stick and was able to tend to all his personal care but now he is in a w/chair, can only walk a few steps with a zimmer (sometimes) and my mum has to see to his toilet needs. My dad is 74 and my mum is 72. Myself and my wife have been doing all we can and they have the alarm now fitted. I am worried about the toll this is taking on my mum. Unfortunately the house is not big enough for us to move in but they have a large space in the back garden which could house a structure (granny flat). I was wondering if there was anywhere that offered financial help to fund this. If they could afford to move to a bungalow they would but it’s is just not possible. Dad is now housebound unless I take him out in the w/chair as mum cannot push it. I would appreciate any advice as sleepless nights are becoming the norm just now
Hi @nickydixon1206 a late reply. I’ve no particular knowledge or experience of grants ( although I expect that they are in very short supply) but came across this - see link below - and you could also try phoning the MS Society’s helpline ( the number is on their website)
in terms of general help in caring for you Dad have you had a look to see what services are provided by your parents local council?
Cost might be an issue but have you looked at electric wheelchairs?
