It was on last night put you can catch it again on the 4seven channel tonight at 8.00 or 4 on demand on ‘tinternet’.
It had a couple and the woman has MS and they were looking for a ‘practical’ property for her down south. Interesting to watch as I have moved due to my MS across the country. Also, there have been a few posts about this type of thing, most recently by Blossom about moving.
Oh, it costs a bit but they had a bit of dosh to spend!
I watched it Marty…it’s one of my favourite programmes. I’m glad they found their new home, she looked so happy So expensive for what you get though. Transport my flat to London…it would probably be worth around 400 thousand
I’ve just watched it. Sheesh, they went on and on and ON about her having MS and any adaptions she may need rather than discussing over stretching themselves financially And the flat was horrible!
I also wouldn’t want to live in London with MS anyway. Just going there for a few hours is totally energy sapping because of the travelling and walking you have to do to get anywhere! It is a logistical nightmare and a right pain especially as my OH and his family think it’s the greatest place on earth.
At least it got people talking at work as they couldn’t understand the discussion on adaptions and being able to manage the stairs in one property as to quote them “but she looked totally normal so what was Phil banging on about”.Pity they didn’t just give a few more details on what MS can mean. They came across as a really nice couple and I do hope they are happy in their new home.
I don’t think they went on about her MS too much. Besides, It was a priority for her. She was quite mobile but I could definitely see the walk/gait that I recognise in myself. I hope hers doesn’t get too bad. If it get’s people talking about MS, then it can only be positive.
Oh, I love this programme and usually catch up with it at weekends as I’m always busy typing in the evenings (gotta pay the bills somehow!). I’ll look out for this one especially or watch it on demand. Thanks for the heads up
I saw the programme and didnt think it went on about MS too much at all. I agree, it could have been explained a bit more really. I too thought they were a lovely couple and it was refreshing to see people be positive about places, rather than too demanding/unrealistic. Im 32 and a long term renter and I have to say it certainly has made me think…
It certainly felt like every time the focus went back to that couple, her MS was mentioned and the lady involved did actually explain the possible eventualties about all mobility aids at the beginning.
I think given the fact that ms was mentioned every time it went back to her, it might have made sense to actually discuss why such things as stairs and mobility aids can be a necessity for MSers, it didn’t really give much clarity to those who don’t know what ms actually is. However, I am in awe of her positivity and if they can afford that amount of money, who are we to question cost and for that matter taste. I love the city centre, granted it does wipe me out, but I am guessing that she tends to work a lot from home so it’s not as if she has to fight through a busy commute, although, even if she did, it’s not totally impossible to do. It’s a shame there aren’t more MSers out there as positive as she is.
I question the affordability aspect of it because I work in the industry. To me, over commiting youself is far more relevant than having wide doorways for example (in the end, the flat they chose had really narrow ones anyway!) I’m also very mindful of the fact that I worked with someone else with MS who had to struggle on well into SPMS, even when it was very clear to everyone (including her) that the time had come to leave, because she & her husband didn’t take the opportunity to downsize when they had the chance and she couldn’t afford to finish work (they also remortgaged not that long ago as well further increasing their debt)
As fo the flat they chose, personally I thought it was horrible - and believe me, I have vision having renovated two houses - but I just couldn’t see the appeal of it at all. There is also no way would I spend that kind of mony on a two bedroom flat. As a Northerner living down in the South, I’m afraid there is still a little part of me that expects a mansion for £250,000
But different strokes for different folks and all that. It is a discussion forum after all
I’d like to think I am still very positive about my diagnosis despite the fact that I’m currently having a torrid time on Gileyna - I’m not beat yet though! But I do wish there were more people with MS who were positive about it. The aforementioned lady I worked with was horribly negative and bitter about it and also in denial (although she would deny this obviously) and sadly, instead of being something that actually brought us together, her attitude completely pushed me and lots of others away.
I enjoyed the programme - always do. Thought they were a lovely couple and quite realistic about what the future might hold. Just ended up asking my husband if my walk looks at all unusual and wishing I had £600,000 to spend on a house…
Talking about suitable homes is troublesome for me. My wife had MS for many years until she died aged 68 from other causes. I had downsized and bought a more suitable house that could be modified. I worked with an architect and builder to modify it for her benefit to cope with the power chair she used. She needed space to manoeuvre and so an extension was added to the ground floor to create a bungalow effect in the 3 bedroom semi. The courtyard was paved for her wheelchair accessible vehicle and the garden made wheelchair friendly with raised beds so she could garden and live in the house with its facilities on the ground floor with lift access to the studio we made from 2 bedrooms upstairs. This property is for now sale 4 years on but, and here’s the biggest but of all: I want to sell it to someone who can best make use of it but how do I tell anyone that? Estate agents just don’t get it, they don’t understand, there seems to be no place for me to shout “Hey everyone, you need an adapted home, ready made for living in from day one? I’ve got one, there is a dearth of properties so let’s get together and talk.”
How do I do this? Yes, I am still seriously affected by MS.
Yorky, where is this house? although we moved to a lovely bungalow,we are now blighted by HS2 and pondering selling to them, all in laws live in N Yorkshire, none of them getting any younger either, although I would never dare mention that to my FIL!
Hi Maude, this house is in a village 3 miles outside York on a quiet street near all the facilities. Doctors, Dentist, Hair and feet, Fish and Chips, Baker, Coop, Post Office, 3 Pub restaurants, a super B & B, Butcher, kneeling regular bus service, village boat hire on the River Ouse, York College life-long learning courses, Chemist, Library, Community Hall, well-used Church hall, Churches and the Archbishops Palace: it’s the village of Bishopthorpe. And it is flat! With easy access in, out and around. The bus drops at York Railway Station for the Virgin East Coast London to Edinburgh and Trans Pennine services (coast to coast and Manchester Airport). The very close A64 links to the A1M, M1 and M62. Bishopthorpe is a dream of a transport hub with a close-by Park and Ride into Historic York with all the facilities there, a CityZap and Coastliner bus services for rapid transit to Leeds and the coast. All these are next to a large Tesco! If you wish to see the property please go to www.hunters.com, York, then search for Bishopthorpe. This house is a ready-made and without a chain.
Gonna see if I can get it on demand. We’ve just put an extension on with wider door and down stairs toilet… will just need a ramp for front door. Hopefully be a while yet
Had a look Yorky, out of my price range! we bought this bungalow that had been on the market for 4 years, so don’t lose hope! We have got it just how we want it, a few of our neighbours have put theirs up for sale(you have to,to benefit from any compensation)not even any streetlights here, never mind pubs, will take some getting used to if we do move!
