Leaning to one side

Hi everyone - first post here!

My mum has Secondary-Progressive MS - over the past couple of years she has developed a strong tendency to lean to her left side - and tilting her head to the point where she now finds it quite difficult to straighten her head. She is now experiencing pain and strong cracking/popping in her neck vertebrae where I assume the joints have been under stress.

She finds it really hard to straighten up and the GP doesn’t seem to really understand what it’s all about.

I just wondered if anyone has experience of this leaning to one side, and if they had any success in righting it?

Thanks!

i experienced similar when outdoors walking home.

it felt like i was leaning at an almost 90 degrees angle.

people were staring and one lady asked if i was alright.

once home i still felt out of alignment.

i tried some gentle yoga stretches but they were painful.

the following day i could manage a couple of minutes so i repeated every couple of hours.

if it hadn’t resolved itself i’d have seen the osteopath.

osteopathy may be of help to your mum but it involves quite a bit of manual manipulation which she may find uncomfortable.

the one i see is marvellous. i saw him 8 years ago and he straightaway saw that my hips were out of alignment and sorted them out within 30 minutes.

i lean to the left too, my ms symptoms have always been on my right side.

Hello Iain

Maybe your mum would benefit from physiotherapy? Does she see a physio? A neurological physiotherapist would be best I should think.

If she doesn’t already have any regular physio, she could ask her MS nurse (assuming she has one of those), or if there’s a neurological rehab team in her area, or failing all else, ask the GP for a referral.

It’s the kind of thing that will just get worse if she doesn’t get some help with it. Hopefully she will.

hi she needs to be checked with an osteopath or one of those bone people sorry brain not working. she could need realigning. has she been checked for osteoporosis?

I am surprised he GP cant send her to physio or have her checked out for bone issues.

I know wheni first started this journey i would walk to the right. when i went into my office i would walk to the right and bang myself on the filing cabinets it was quite bizarre. my staff thought i was drunk.

anyway you mum needs checking without doubt.

Hey there,

my mum has also the same problems since 2 years. She has also SPMS and she leans always on the right side. Nothing helps, nobody knows what it is. some say it is spasm on this side. She also has very heavy back pain and developed a scoliosis. Does anyone experienced something like that and knows how to cure? Sorry for my bad english - i come from Germany.

Best greetings

Nini

Hi Nini, youve joined an old post sweetie. You`ll get more replies if you start a new thread on EL.

I lean over to the left…it can be a problem. It will cause discomfort/pain when the vertebrae arent aligned well.

Assuming you haven’t done it already, I would get her gait assessed by a decent physio, as they should be able to identify areas of muscle weakness and suggest a programme of exercises to help. If your mum can improve her posture it might help to reduce strain on her back too.

I hope you find a workable solution.

Thank you very much! i opened a new topic. She has physio-therapy for years, but it doesn´t cure the problem.
