Latest on Vitamin D levels to take

Hi
I have been reading through all the past comments on Vitamin D levels to take which all show some large variations.
Having watched some of the later information by some regarded medical professionals and available information from more recent studies it would appear that our levels are far far too low.
When I listen to Professional Dr’s ( Unsponsored ) who are taking 8000 units daily complemented by K2 and with studies showing 20,000 plus isn’t unreasonable for some people it seems odd when I read what others are taking.
Studies appear to show that above a certain level a natural plateau is reached with no further effect.
All the previous post have some age to them and I was wondering if anyone had any other fresh updated information.
I have been personally recommended to take 2000units daily by my neurologist but I have my first appointment with my MS nurse on Sept 2nd.
I will obviously be asking her about it but it would be nice to also discuss my findings of the levels others are taking.
Many thanks and best wishes to all
Dave

Hi, my neurologist checked my vitamin D levels a few months ago and put me on a loading dose of 30,000 units a week for 10 weeks and I’m now on 1000 units a day going forward.
I had read a wee bit about it at the time and the initial loading dose is to get you up close to normal levels quickly as the basic 1000 a day would take months if not years to build back up to a normal level but the amount needed is very much dependent on your individual starting point.

Probably best to get tested and find out if you are deficient first. I expect you have seen this link already, but just in case.

Vitamin D supplements: what dose? - by Gavin Giovannoni (substack.com)

The neurologist insisted on check my D3 levels many years ago and I’ve been supplementing since. The GP refused my request to check what my levels are now, unfortunately. Maybe others have more luck?

I’ve been taking three to four thousand i units a day for years and years and my MS Nurse says that’s good. Hope that helps

check the link in @whammel 's post. That’s the best guide.

Normal population need much less than MS-er’s. It appears that we need to take more as our bodies are less efficient at absorbing it. Best bet is still sunlight :+1: I take 4000IU when the clocks go forward (spring) and up it to 8000 when the clocks go back (autumn). Have a metered mouth spray and tablets and tend to alternate them.

Thank you for all the replies.
Apologies for the slight delay in responding but a surprise little joy ride in an ambulance came up for me yesterday.
All fine now, or at least as fine as this MS garbage can be I suppose.
I have read the link on Whammels reply and will honestly consider the findings.
I was deficient but since then I have managed to get my levels back to an acceptable level.
I have an appointment with neurology on the 2nd and so it will be nice to have some additional knowledge prior to any other discussions. This will be my first appointment since my diagnosis so I’m thinking there will be a lot of information to take in that day.
Thank you to all and best wishes,
Dave
