vitamin d

Hi everyone,

I have been feeling extremely tired i have ms.I asked my doctor to check my vitamin d levels which come back as 25 which i believe is a severe deficiency (excuse the spelling) I have been given tablets to take at 20,000iu three times a week.Does anyone know how long this takes to work.Or has anyone been in a similar position.

Thanks

Nina

Greetings Nina

There are many people visiting these boards who take a regular daily vitamin d supplement, myself included. I’m on 5,000iu per day which I have in softgel form. I have read about others taking 10,000 or more per day but whatever they take I think most would agree that there seems to be some connection between ms and the benefits of taking a vitamin d supplement.

Personally I take a few other things too, but I radically changed the way I eat on diagnosis and now I eat gluten free with low saturated fat and low sugar, many different multivits and plenty of fresh vegetable and herbs. I am not a smoker but I have heard of some improvements being noticed by taking waccybaccy. The choices I have made are a personal choice made on private research, not something suggested or directed at me.

20,000 iu is a strong starter course but you might consider maintaining a regular intake at a lower level, indefinitely. Some people relax the course during the summer months. Vitamin d is a vitamin derived from the sun’s natural rays so I can understand this. I don’t relax my own intake, but we are all very different.

My vitamin d level was 20 when originally tested and that was a couple of weeks after being on holiday in the sun at 32 degrees! Hospital immediately put me on 10,000iu a day which I was given for 6 months - I’m now on 10,000ou every other day. It takes about a month or more for the tablets to take effect especially if levels are low to start with but gradually I felt much better. Like mark I also take other supplements daily (as I think most people on here do) and have changed my diet slightly and I think the supplements have made some difference. Karina

My vitamin D level was 13 when first tested, also after being on a sunny holiday a month earlier. I had to take 15 x 20,000 in one day, then 2 x 20,000 weekly and was told I would need testing again after 8 weeks. Not really seen any benefit of taking them yet, but I have only been taking them for 6 weeks. I also take B12 and Omega-3 and have changed my diet too.
