Kitchen Gadgets!

Hi all Just starting the sunday dinner and was thinking about all the nifty little gadgets that help me prepare. As i suffer with weakness and numbness in my arm doing the things I like on a sunday roast can be a bit of a pain so for christmas my lovely mommykins brought me a masha! I laughed about it when i opened it saying do you not like my mash potato! But oh my life what a god send it is! No more tired arm or lumpy mash!! Does anyone else use other kitchen gadgets? Xx

Hi Sammie I got the masha for Christmas too it’s great isn’t it. I too struggle with many things I’ve got a great tool that I got from pampered chef a chopper that I use for chopping onions chilli garlic & ginger. But other than those I usually buy everything already prepared. Saves me some energy  Sue x

Not so much a little gadget but couldn’t do without the slow cooker now. The helpful folk on here gave me lots of tips and some recipes. Find it so helpful to come home after work and find dinner all ready - fantastic. The other thing is my useful jar opener. What we really need is a gadget for getting stuff out of that awful stiff plastic. I have had to resort to a tin opener to get a toothbrush out of its packaging.

Iv got a chopper but its a bit deadly so i dont use it. Although I have got a kmix hand blender with all different attachments and one that chops which is good. As for the slower cooker… I love mine and wouldnt be without it. I use it to cook my meat. Put a nice joint of pork in (remove crackling first and put that in the oven) with a enough veg stock to cover it and oh my life it just falls apart! Great for doing pulled pork and the stock makes amazing gravy! I can never open jam jars etc so might have to invest in one of those xx

I have a slow cooker, and a hologen oven which I LOVE. Its so easy to make a roast dinner in my halogen, its the one day I really let myself cook (courtesy of aunt bessie as well lol). No cleaning oven, its easy to get the food out, and so quick to cook too.

Then I have my electric egg boiler. You can boil eggs in it so no boiling hot water on the cooker top, I love mine its so easy to use, and you can boil them hard, soft, or softer then soft lol. Just put the eggs in the machine, the required amount of water and the machine cooks them for you. LOVE IT and so safe too.

Oh yes! Slow cooker for cooking a roast, and an electric carving knife for slicing it (a friend has put textured ‘stuff’ on the bottons for me for a better grip). Also have a hand blender with a whisk attachment and a chopper attachment, which are fab. Push button kettle is much safer than having to lift the old one… xx

I think i might have to go kitchen shopping!! Some great gadgets about! Xx

Hi I don’t have any plush gadgets but I do have this little square piece of rubbery kind of material which I use to open jars, milk tops and all sorts. I have no idea what it is, got given it when I went to a fatigue management course. It is absolutely brilliant and has made my life so much easier. I just place it on lids and twist and hey presto it’s off! If anyone is interested I have a meet with my MS nurse in a few weeks can ask ask her what it’s called and where they got it from.

Hmmm need to find out more about the slow cooker

Hi Indy.

On 31 October last year there was a discussion on the boards about slow cookers. See if you can trace it - very informative. I bought one (Crockpot) and absolutely love it. After being at work, coming home to a hot meal all ready to eat is great. I wouldn’t be without it.

On a similar tack, I recently bought my self a four-wheeled shopping trolley. Not for shopping but for moving things about the house.

Things like the washing, rubbish etc. Because it has four wheels you push it in front of you rather than drag it behind you, helps with balance too though couldn’t take my weight. It has certainly made things easier about the house.

I’ve got a great little thing that also came from Pampered Chef (not sure if they’re still going now?) Difficult to describe, it’s D shaped, a straight wooden handle handle with several curved flattish blades, and is brilliant for rubbing fat into flour. Makes pastry making such a doddle! Gxxx

‘Toothbrush’ …what the heck’s a ‘toothbrush’ !!!

To open jars - just give the edge of the lid a sharp tap on one side then the opposite - on your worktop. The lid will loosen - so do be careful as you don’t want the lid to fall off. But this works.

As an alternative to the “masha” (see the first two items), how about a potato ricer.

If you don’t know, this is like a garlic press on steroids. Take your average spud, 10 minutes in microwave, cut across one end, drop it in the ricer (cut down) and squeeze.

Bought one ages ago (6-7 years) in France (very strong white plastic) and it lasted for a long time. Finally one handle failed, last year. Bought a stainless steel one that bent all out of shape the first time it was used. Then found one on Amazon, just like then one from France but with a different label, so it’s back to easy mash.

Geoff

Hi Geoff The ricer sounds like a good alternative! But the masha does more than mashing. You can do cake mixes etc with it. I wouldnt be without it now x

SammieJo,

ls Masha - the actual name of the gadget - only l could not find it when l ‘googled’ - only it does sound interesting.

Found it!!
