Seeing as nobody replied yet I thought I jump in.

A few people in my MS circle suffer from this and it comes and goes.

I pretty sure they take Baclofen for this. I would give your MS nurse a shout to verify this is what you need unless you

have a really switched on GP

Is it a rhythmic bouncing off your foot, or the muscle in your thigh? If so it may be clonus. I get this when I put my foot on the floor suddenly, or if I’ve overused my leg muscles. I’m afraid I don’t know of any treatment for it.

I get a kind of after shock jerk movement when I open my hand to release somthing. Krissy

Hi Anna

Sorry to read that you are experiencing this. Wish I could have replied earlier.

Unfortunately muscle problems (spasms/ spasticity etc) are my only real MS symptom and I’m pretty clued up on it now. In fact, this subject and exercise are my only real reasons for contributing to forum threads!

Some sufferers of Multiple Sclerosis can experience a condition called Secondary Dystonia. It can cause the symptoms you are experiencing. Here is a very useful NHS link to the condition:

Dystonia - NHS. Can’t hyperlink the address, i’m afraid, so just copy the link to your browser.

Everything you need to know is detailed on the website, including medications and treatment. That said, it does not include the drug, Tizanidine which is the one I am prescribed. Together with Baclofen, these are the first line drugs prescribed for these symptoms in MS. There are others, if these drugs prove ineffective. Personally, Baclofen had absolutely no effect on my symptoms, but Tizanidine worked very well.

Hope you start to feel better soon.

Good luck
