Jaw Pain & Spasms

Hi,

I wonder if anyone can help me with some advice about new symptoms I have been getting recently.

I have been having tic like muscle spasms in the right side of my face for a few weeks now. They come in bouts, a good few at a time and then they disappear. It tends to be when I’m concentrating that sets them off, I mean when I hold my jaw in a certain way. The spasm seems to start in my jaw near my right ear and then move into my lower jaw, sometimes making it jolt to the side uncontrollably. My boyfriend tells me I look like a rabbit when this is happening.

Until now although frustrating the episodes haven’t really been causing me too much pain, although sometimes the lower jaw jolts have been painful and worrying as I literally cannot make my jaw move back when this happens.

Last night however I had a very painful episode where my lower jaw again moved to the side and I could not move it back. It felt as if my lower jaw was being ripped off my face and there was nothing I could do to stop it. The episode lasted about a minute, with me screaming in agony and my poor mother trying her best to calm me down.

Once the pain stopped I have been left feeling exhausted (even for me as I already suffer with extreme fatigue), I went to bed at 8pm and woke at 9:30am and then have been back in bed most of the day. Although the pain has now stopped my jaw is still aching a bit and I’m terrified that it will happen again.

Has anyone else has anything like this happen and could this be related to MS.

My current diagnosis is still ‘probable MS’ since I have only had one legion show up on an MRI and apparently I need two to confirm the diagnosis.

Thanks in advance, Helen.

Hi Helen

Found your post on page 3, cannot help but wanted to bump you back to page 1 where others will see it

Hello Helen. I’ve never experienced with my jaw what you describe…just want to send my best wishes out to you and hope things improve soon. Are you contacing ms nurse or gp about this Helen…I think maybe you should. Take care

Thanks for the bump Tracey. Thanks for your support Blossom.

I have contacted my MS specialist nurse but I was waiting for her to get back to me. She rang today but can’t really help because although it does sound like an MS symptom her recommendation would be another drug to ease the spasms (which I can’t take as I’m currently 25 weeks pregnant). She said she would get in touch with my neurologist and get back to me if he gets back to her but I’m not holding my breath. I do have an appointment with him at the end of November anyway so if all else fails I can discuss it with him then.

Fingers crossed my jaw behaves till then.
