Is increased pain sensitivity a thing?

Hi everyone,
I’m currently waiting for brain and cervical spine MRI results. I have EMG testing coming up and a phone appointment with the sleep clinic after my at home sleep study ruled out sleep apnea- I have crazy fatigue despite sleeping well whenever I get the chance!

To add to my myriad of symptoms, I realised I’m more sensitive to pain, particularly in my hands. Things that before would’ve maybe warranted an under my breath whisper of a curse word now result in an almost unavoidable loud yelp.

Is this a possible MS thing? Is it something worth documenting with my GP? I don’t want to be that person but I’ve let so many symptoms and ailments be ignored over the years that a lot of what I have been experiencing for years now seems like a new thing.

Thank you.

Hi Kattb76

Ask the GP/Neuro to make a note of the increased sensitivity, it may tie in with the results of your recent MRI(s); the GP/Neuro will also be able to check back with you at the next review to see if the sensitivity has resolved, getting worse or is staying the same.

I have the opposite problem with reduced/altered sensation - although cold things tend to feel hot, I have trouble feeling heat and have to be very careful in the kitchen or when running a bath.

Thank you. I will do that. It’s ‘funny’ you should say about altered sensation, I could’ve sworn a butter knife I rested my arm on was hot last week but it was only the initial contact. I’ve also been prescribed antihistamines and cream for an un-scratchable itch near my shoulder blade which I described as more internal than external and crawling or wet droplet sensations. They didn’t work but those feelings subsided after a month or so.
Thank you for responding

I haven’t got more sensitive to pain in any general sense, but particular patches of me that have been damaged by MS in the past remain permanently over-sensitive to touch or temperature. There are favourite necklaces that I will never wear again because they sit on the ‘wrong’ part of my neck and are intolerable to wear now, for instance.
