Indwelling catheter

Bit of help required, been recently fitted with an indwelling catheter, how long do they last? And I recently had a feeling that I desperately need to pee and thought I could feel pee leaking out of my penis, can this happen, any ideas as to why I should get this sensation. Many thanks for your advice

l take it you have a SPC - Supra pubic catheter. Had mine over 20yrs. The feeling you get can be when the head of the catheter, the tip with the draingage holes, can get sucked into the bladder wall and the holes block. Try to stand and move to dislodge it or turn the catheter round and round and pull it slightly out giving the tube a squeeze to see if it clears any debris that can block the drainage.

As soon as the catheter tip is not able to drain you will feel the urge to pee as normal.

Drink plenty of water to keep the urine diluted - and a glass of hot or cold water with tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and a teaspoon of honey will help to neutralise the ph in your bladder.

Hi Andrew, An indwelling catheter should last 12/13 weeks before it needs changing . The day bag gets changed every 7 days. Unfortunately you can still have urine come out of your penis , its called bypassing. There is usually a reason for this , such as the catheter is blocked , something has irritated your bladder or you have an infection .

If this feeling persists and you do start bypassing get the district nurses in . They will change the catheter and check for blockages / infection . If it continues then its back to the doc’s / consultant .

Good luck

l have my catheter changed every 5 weeks. Otherwise it gets too ‘gummed’ up and difficult to remove. 6 weeks is the norm.

Hi, an indwelling catheter goes through the urethra into the bladder, wheras a supra pubic catheter doesnt go into the urethra, but through the abdomen wall, just above the pubic area and into the bladder.

I`ve had the former and now have the spc. Both types are capable of by passing. I sometimes get the feeling that I am going to wee the normal way and know I shouldnt.

Its most common reason for doing so, is that my tube gets kinked, or when lying down with my feet up and the bladders opening is misaligned. I wriggle the tube and myself and this usually starts the draining process off again.

I have my catheter changed every 4 weeks, as any longer debris and fluffy bits clog the opening!

Drinking lots of water is very important to keep a cleaner bladder.

Utis can also cause bypassing, so maybe you need to get a sample in to the doc`s, for testing.

Boudica !

You wouldn’t joke if urine trouble. Don’t be a damper and remember the P should be silent as in swimming pool. Give me a tinkle and let’s see if wee can’t get this sorted.

Sprinkle joke.

There was an explosion at the Sprinkles factory yesterday. Fortunately there have been no fatalities, but the number of injured are reported to be in the hundreds and thousands.

(I think that covers everything).
