Hot, foreign holidays. Experiences please.

Hi all, So thoughts have turned to hotter, sunnier climes. But knowing what I know now, I wonder if thoughts should be banished. I didn’t know that I had MS when we were in Greece, in September but couldn’t understand why the heat was affecting me so badly and yet had never done so before. Now I know that extreme temperatures exacerbate MS symptoms and wonder what this bodes for future visits. Does anyone else go on holiday to warmer places please. If so, any problems, how do you deal with it etc. also where is best for health insurance? Thanks Xx

Hi Mrs H I went to France this year. I find the heat makes my fingers curl up and stiffen and so sort of makes things worse but my pain wasn’t as bad. Now it’s got cold my fingers just feel like I have been cleaning out the freezer all the time and are a lot more painful. So I would rather be back in a sunny France than chilly old England. I used the ms society link for travel insurance but they don’t do day trips. The AA insurance does day trips and was very reasonable when we went on a day trip there. Better safe than stuck! Mish x

Oops I thought I only pressed post once. Sorry

Uhtoffs phenomena was/is one of main symptoms. My neuro said its a common symptons and thats why i can only have lukewarm baths. It makes sense since dx. But, i didnt have much trouble in turkey last yr in 45 degree heat which was strange

I have been going to playa blanca in lanzarote for years, because there is always a breeze I don’t get anymore unpleasant symptoms than at home. In fact I always feel better whilst I am there. We love it so much we plan to retire there in five years. I always do my ins through my bank. Happy holidays. Karen x

Thanks everyone. I guess as long as we’ve got insurance, it doesn’t really matter what happens. And its not like a do a lot when we’re there except rest!!

I’m glad you asked this MrsH , I was wondering the same thing.

I was in Turkey in Septeber, it was very hot, in the low to mid thirties every day, I was great there, I used the lift only twice in two weeks, both times just cos stairs and cases dont mix well. I walked up and down 98 steps countless times a day.

It could have been the sun, it could have been the free booze, it could have been the happy holiday feeling, whatever it was I cant wait to feel it again.

Its the humidity that kills me.

I can do heat as long as I build up with it as the day warms. I work on as long as I go to somewhere where its usually got a good breeze going then it will be fine.

Of course its vital to keep the fluids up when its hot!!! Oh the joys of all inclusive in Sharm where they bring you beers on the beach when they think you may need another.

Pip

I do suffer in the heat , so it’s beach holidays for me. Since diagnosis, Caribbean, Belize, Thailand, France lots, Italy lots, Egypt twice, Cuba. Lots of insurance and its hello fishes:) I’m 10 years in, and its Sri Lanka and Caribbean again this year.

I figured better pack it in while I can and I’ve been lucky so far.
