Gall stones and a low fat diet

Hi everyone, I haven’t been on here for a while too many spasms and back pain.

I’ve just found out that the Jaundice I suffered the other week was due to gall stones, it’s made me realise that some of the MS hug pain is actually down to these wretched stones.

“But I’m on a low fat diet” I told my doc, having read up on this it appears that all those years of eating loads of cheese contributed to the stones and the very low fat diet has made them grow.

I’d like them removed as I don’t want to come off of this diet, will see what the doc says in the next few days, honestly you can’t win

I have had gallbladder disease and a gall bladder removed. Apparently after this you are suppose to have a lowfat diet. I didnt realise this and carried on eating chocolate etc. Now with ms in the mix I am striving to eat low fat for both reasons as I dont think my body likes fat anyway … its such a balancing act. My sympathy is with you, I have never suffered as much pain as the gall stones and ive had 3 kids naturally xxxx

I feel for you Corkie. I, like Zoe have had Gallbladder disease and in turn had my gallbladder removed. I wasnt told about a low fat diet after the op - so i carried on!!! Only difference now is that I cannot drink alcohol without vomming.

Good luck - hopefully they will remove them, although I guess they would come back?

Thank you both for your messages of support, I do appreciate it.

Poor you

As the proud owner of a 1cm gallstone (trouble-free so far), you have my sympathy. When it first appeared on an ultrasound scan for something else, everyone said “Female, Fat and Forty - you’re not fat, you shouldn’t have gallstones!”

My GP said that contributing factors for gallstones include diabetes, being overweight, rapid weight loss (more than 0.5-1kg per week) and being on the pill - which might explain why so many women get gallstones, I guess.

Another friend who had gallstones (yep, having been on an extreme diet - 500 calories per day - and lost a huge amount of weight very quickly) was in such agony with them a couple of years ago that she had to have them whipped out pretty sharpish, and was really pleased with the result. She has a nastier neurological condition than MS and was worried about the effects of the keyhole op and recovery, but all went “normally” and she just has to watch what she eats now.

Hope you get some relief soon.

Thank you for the information Lolli, it helps to know it’s not just me! I don’t know what the doc will do about it yet, hopefully will find out tomorrow.

I have lost some weight, not on purpose but because I started back on the Jelinek diet. It is nice not to be too overweight as it’s so easy to put on weight with a disease like ms.
