Ms+gallstone problems

Had monstrous stomach cramps the other night. They were familiar from a long time ago, when I was diagnosed with having gallstones. Have they been asleep and suddenly re-emerged? Anybody else who has got experience with Ms+gallstones?

Hi there

yes I had a gallstone problem back in 2009. Started suffering with pains in my right side and was getting colic like pain quite often. I actually projectile vomited in the street one day when I was in agony. Anyway, I got sent for an ultrasound and they told me I had multiple gallstones. I was then referred to a surgeon who said my gallbladder needed to be removed. I was only 31 years old and when I asked “am I not a bit young to have my gallbladder removed?” He told me no and that he was doing the same operation on a 15 yr old the following week. Anyway, because I had Bupa it all happened relatively quickly and no sooner had I seen the consultant was I admitted to have my gallbladder whipped out. Turns out it had attached itself to the underside of my liver (too much info I know) and they had to prize it off. So now I am gallbladder free and although better for it I do still sometimes get odd twinges on my right side where the original pain was. That’s my story.

best of luck!

Thanks Lisa, well actually, my pain was right in the middle, so maybe not gallstones? Went to see my Gp this morning and now have a forthcoming hospital appointment to get it checked out. I am also coming down with a streaming cold, maybe my whole system is weakened - well, it’s all a big guessing game…best, Gingerlil xxx

Had horrendous pain in Jan/Feb 2014. Called paramedic twice and went to casualty twice and it was gallstones, horrible. Eventually, only after I changed GP, I was seen by consultant who said I needed the gall bladder removed. So finally I had op in Jan 2015. Problem was that my ms complicated my recovery, which everyone was aware of, so I was first on the list and staff checked up on me quite frequently. I was supposed to be out the same day, but couldn’t feel bladder and couldn’t pass water independently, so had to stay in extra night. Problems continued, so ended up coming out with a catheter fitted and needed the District Nurse to sort me out.

But, not having that fear of the pain of gallstones, it was all worth it. My recovery was much slower than it would have been for non ms sufferer but I got there eventually. My MS nurse was absolutely fantastic through all this. She came to see me after my surgery and sorted out the ward nurses over the best catheter for me and finally sorted out the mess when the nurses forgot to organise the District Nurse for me, so if you have a good one get them involved!

hope this helps!

Gallstone pain can also be on the Middle. Well that’s what I’ve heard anyway x

thanks Lisa, sorry I didn’t get back earlier. Had another attack last night, + a streaming cold now :-((( Also remembered when I had attacks before +was offered to have gall bladder removed, I refused operation and well … had years of of a relatively peaceful life (as far as gallstones are concerned. :))). Too bad they have come back! And yes I am pretty sure it is gallstones.

I have trouble with gallstones too so have to watch my diet. A hot water bottle on the painful area helps. It is such a horrible pain. Feel for you!

well, many thanks for all the comments so far! my story however is going on: woke up in the middle of last night, staggered up> bathroom, violently sick :-((( not once, but it went on for several hours and it was excruciatingly painful. I am the wrong age +wrong weight 55 kg - and of course it had to happen over the weekend!

and forgot to mention, I hadn’t eaten anything all day …it was the dinner from 3days before, that came up…

you poor thing, that’s awful. have you got a walk-in centre nearby? either that or an A&E dept. make sure you’re ok?! can you keep decent amounts of fluids down? keep us posted about it. (((((hugs)))))

again many thanks for advice. Right, drink lots of water - one thing I always forget to do! going anywhere A&E etc not really possible…just feeling all round too awful.

Have you tried a hot water bottle on the area? Drink water and try to nibble on a plain biscuit or something. My hubby ended up in hospital for 11 days with gallstone trouble. He had jaundice too as he hadn’t drunk anything for 2 to 3 days. I did nag him and ended up phoning for an ambulance and they took him to A&E straight away. Are you taking anything for the pain? I was told to take paracetamol which did help. Worried about you.

2 years ago I suffered terribly with Gallstones when I felt as ill as you describe it was because a Gallstone was obstructing my gastric tract, I ended up being seen in A&E after needing 2g of paracetamol and 120g Codiene which the GP instructed me to take in 3.5hr period. The pain was so bad I couldn’t bend in the middle. I had all my bloods done and was sent home once pain killers took effect, my bloods came back that my Liver function was being affected so I was sent to the hot surgical clinic the next day. I have never felt abdo pain like it and hope I never do again. I then had my Gallbladder removed Laparoscopically shortly afterwards & have been fine since. I’m not saying to scare you but you can end up in ITU with Pancreatitis from Gallstones so if you feel so bad you don’t feel you can go anywhere dial 999 and get taken in by ambulance.

Hope you feel better soon

Hello, I was misdiagnosed, I had horrific pain all in my left side and it was extremely tender to touch, they advised me I had a gallstone so they wanted to remove my gallbladder, after a week in hospital being nil by mouth from midnight to 6pm I had the op and the recovery was awful, all the bruising I had and the pain was worse all over my torso with more sharp pain in my left side. I went back and forth to the Dr, my family got involved as it got serious as I lost a lot of weight, I thought this was the end and that I would never see my children grow up, I had only had my new born baby in the October 2018 and all this kicked off following sepsis after the birth and nearly dying, I had the gallbladder op in March 2019 but the pain was awful and I had an attack where I hyperventilated, it was worse than giving birth. After being seen by a neurologist and more tests, they finally gave me an MRI and found lesions on my brain and spine, he diagnosed me with MS in September 2019. If it wasn’t for my sister phoning the neurologist department every day for a cancellation, I would not of been seen until March 2020!

has anybody else had their gallbladder removed only to find out the persistent pain was actually Multiple Sclerosis?
