Foot drop at night

Hi all I’ve been dx 9yrs. I have foot drop in my left foot that overnight often leads to cramping in my left calf. It’s now also becoming harder to get off to sleep as the weight of the duvet exacerbates this. I know compared to many it’s minor but does anyone have any suggestions for overcoming this it’s really irritating. Thanks in advance Adam

Hi Adam,

I’ve got foot drop in left foot too. Very frustrating.

Magnesium seems to help with cramp, either tablet or some people get a gel that you can rub into affected area.

Worth a try.

Foot drop is my current worst symptom. I keep the duvet over the end of the bed, so it isnt weighing down on my feet. If your bed ed wont allow for this, get a cradle.

I am awaiting orthotics to make some splints. My fet ache like chuff.

Thanks guys, here’s a link to the orthotic I have got through the NHS orthotist ToeOFF® 2.0 | Foot Drop, Adult | Products | Allard UK It really helps for getting about. I use a magnesium spray on my chest as I have a permanent MS hug. Best wishes Adam

Cramp & duvet weight are an understood issue for me. I take Baclofen to reduce spasms at night as the spasm often develops into vicious cramp. I now take Quinine sulphate as well as drinking lots of tonic water which seems to help. When a nasty cramp does occur if at all possible I will deep breathe out and try to consciously relax. (sounds a bit “space cadet” but when it works <65%> I am relieved.) The one cramp this does not work for me at all is when my big toe is at 90 degrees to my foot and the front of my shin explodes into significant painangry

Just about every night the weight of the duvet on my foot is uncomfortable so I end up leaving one leg on top of the duvet. Not the biggest of problems byt a bit annoying.

I have slight foot drop on my right foot which gradually gets worse as the day goes on, but if I’ve pushed myself to what I call my “crash point” , basically over dong things, my foot drop comes on very quickly, it actually turns in slightly and drops, causing me to trip on the outside of my foot.

For constant foot drop you can get an ankle brace that holds your foot in better upright position.

They are good and discreet as well.
