Enola Gay

I don’t wish to sound negative about the Olympic opening ceremony but am I the only one who feels it was a little insensetive to play Enola Gay by OMD at the Olympics.
Enola Gay being the name of the plane which dropped the first atomic bomb, on Hiroshima.

I do not think this was insensitive at all, the music was just played as a reflection of the music of the eighties. Teresa xx

How did you feel about the theme music from the “Dambusters”?

Yes but there are plenty of tunes that represent the eighties.

Hi, I commented about that at the time, I thought it was a surprising choice. I guess it did just reflect the music of the 80s but when that band had lots of other hits that could have been played I was surprised at the choice of Enola Gay. Cheryl:-)

I think it was carefully selected, that’s the point.

I’m sure our Japanese friends have a lot more to worry about than an OMD track from the 80s, especially after last year. Don’t worry about it. x

I doubt they will (even if they knew what it was on about in the 1st place!).

I think as British people… we play down our achievements and those of our ancestors. When people say the British are lazy… I think how stupid can one be… We used to run half the world and the Industrial Revolution was started in the British Isles. I would even go as far to say such people who comment like this… are racist towards the British population. It was not the peoples choice to close the mines… steel works and shipyards… and throw millions of men into either unemployment or minimum wage temporary jobs with no pension and rights. Condeming whole areas to the everyday problems we only ever thought existed in the black ghettos of the USA

As well as being the workshop of the world… we also not so long ago won two world wars. With a little help from the Soviets and the USA.

And in this age of austerity… what a joke that is… basically the poorer members of society are subsidising the wealthier.

Ask yourself… what do the wealthier members do ? They go on an exotic holiday… thus spending their gains at the expense of the poorer people abroad… No benefit to the UK.

I believe that The Dambusters theme and Enola Gay were a tongue in cheek selection… and a reminder to the countries of the world that we… the British won the 2nd World War.

Never forget…

Thanks for that I am glad that sombody else thought the same.

Expecting to get my head bitten off but had some good points made.

I’m certainly not anti British and don’t know if it was pointed at me but I’m not racist ( can’t understand how that even came into it ).

Thanks for all the replies everbody.

I think using London calling is worse, it has been used for evrything since 2007, the lyrics really do not send a positive message…although I love the Clash
