DVLA / car insurance

Hello everyone! I’ve been a bit of the lurker in the shadows going through everyone’s advice whilst awaiting my diagnosis. In January I was finally diagnosed with RRMS (5 months after the mri :grimacing:) and now the added admin problems start! After diagnosis I contacted the DVLA to notify them. My insurance was due up a month later so my other half became my chauffeur as I thought I’d save myself an admin fee letting them know and I’d just sort it when the renewal was up….what a mistake that was! I’ve come to renew but the questions say “have you notified the dvla and have they issued a license”…or along those lines. I’ve notified the DVLA but heard nothing back. I’ve chased with them and been told I’ve just got to wait. I can’t say either way if they’ll sort the license, I assume so as thankfully mobility is ok but I don’t want to say yes for the insurance without knowing 100%!! Has anyone else been through this badly timed issue and have any advice? Thanks so much in advance.

Unfortunately, you’re in for a long drawn out process with the DVLA. if you snuck up behind them and kicked them they still wouldn’t be able to give you a quick straight answer about their arse cheek and their elbow. The only thing they’ll do with any speed is remove your licence.

In my opinion, you’re better off trying to get an assessment and written advice about your ability/suitability for driving from your GP, your Neurologist and Opthalmology.

I took myself off the road and haven’t driven since my issues all began at the end of 2023.

I did try to call them a couple of times but, I have no interest in staying on hold until they can be bothered to answer the phone so, I finished the calls and haven’t tried again.

I have no intention of ever sending my licence to them because it’s a useful form of ID that I paid for and, it’s mine.

You may be able to get more useful advice from CAB and the MS society.

Apologies for the slight rant x

Good luck and, all the best :crossed_fingers: :slightly_smiling_face:

Jon.

I dutifully notified my insurance co and DVLA upon diagnosis (2021). Insurer wasn’t interested as long as DVLA were OK and no loading of premium because of my new label. DVLA didn’t stop me driving, sent me a form which I filled out with details of my medical professionals and upon receipt of necessary documentation, revoked my 10yr licence and issued a 3yr licence. Standard procedure apparently unless there has been an incident of note. Similar process for renewing a 3yr licence when it is due to expire.
