Driving and insurance

Just thought I’d share this … whilst still smarting from the DVLA issuing me a restricted driving licence and I call my husbands insurance to tell them … they promptly cancel his insurance with immediate effect !! … and very generously offer to waive the cancellation fee!!! … needless to say I didn’t thank them… but faith restored …my own insurers … thanks for updating us on developments , must be really difficult for you but don’t worry we know dvla are doing this now arbitrarily and we understand they need to be cautious but we recognise it’s impact is different for everyone but as long as you feel confident in driving, listen to your body and you still have a full licence it makes no difference to us …a sensible and balanced insurer who’d have thought it !

Hi Mollymoo

I’d call your husband’s insurer, and politely tell them they’ve broken the law. That is discrimination, and the law is on your side. If the DVLA say you’re safe to drive, then you’re safe to drive, and insurers are not even allowed to increase your premium, let alone cancel it.

I have just renewed my insurance which is my first renewal since my diagnosis and they were excellent. I am with Insure Pink which is underwritten by Hastings. They did not make any changes to the cover or premium because of the diagnosis.

Hope you have a better experience with a good insurer!

If you have any further problems I am sure the insurance ombudsman would be interested in your case

Mollymoo – I don’t understand your post -

I’m sure Car Insurance Companies will only deal directly with the policy holder and wont cancel someone’s policy on the word of a third party.

A third party can inform insurers of changes to circumstances if they are a named driver on the policy, such as named driver and spouse. What happens then depends on the insurer. Given the fact that the DVLA still allows Mollymoo to drive, most will let the policy continue without changes. A few may wish to end the policy, but even these should allow a grace period to allow replacement insurance to be arranged. Otherwise you’re left without insurance and risk breaking the law.

Thanks folks … I have considered taking them on over it but then don’t bother as much like challenging dvla if takes energy …annoying though as my husband has had a heart attack… whilst driving a 7.5 ton lorry … much more likely to harm people or re occur without warning … guess who still has insurance and his licence intact !

Not sure about third parties but I am sure that the insurance cannot be cancel because of MS and having a restricted licence it is against the law so we are not getting all or the correct information.

Having a restricted licence isn’t the end of the world it just means DVLA are making sure your safe to other users and pedestrians.

Ronin.

P.S.I have just given my licence up voluntarily after 45yrs.

Yes it hurt.

Hi ronin they did just cancel it … I was t thinking straight at the time otherwise I’d have challenged it . We had rung them the re renewal that was due in a couple of weeks so when it came to the question as changes I told them yes my licence has been restricted due to ms … she said fine I’ll just enter that then same back very embarrassed and said we are cancelling it as the under writers ageas won’t cover you … I said that’s odd as they also under write the company that had undercut them … she said they all have different agreements with their underwriter… like you say they shouldn’t have done it … but they did and we lost 3 weeks cover …
