Good afternoon I knew that my driving license would have to be replaced every 3 years, I was surprised when I got in from work today and there was a letter from DVLA stating I would have to have a driving assessment. I know I would never pass my driving test again, due to my memory, I am getting a bit worried about the driving assessment too! Has anybody else been in this situation before, who can give me some advise about the situation please? Cheers Mark
Just read your post? Have you had your driving assessment wondering how you got on and what job you do?
Hi mark, I send your subject title and was intrigued as I have been recently diagnosed and wondered what I needed to do, if anything, about informing the dvla and insurance company? I don’t drive too much nowadays as try to walk more and I just don’t drive when I have episodes or off days so I very much listen to my body but I’m guessing now that you have to inform dvla and have an assessment? I’m now worried too?! Sorry, i should be giving you advice and not stealing your subject lol! Hope you are ok?
There’s a form on the DVLA website to fill in and post to them telling them you’ve been diagnosed with MS. They’ll then contact your neuro and GP and decide if you can still have a licence. Most people seem to get a three year licence with the van and motorbike bit removed. It takes a while for a decision. I don’t know about a driving assessment though.
Just to add to what Wilf has said, you’re legally obliged to inform the DVLA. As said, it really does take a while to get a decision - it can take months sometimes! There’s nothing to worry about though. A 3 year licence is pretty standard, which just has to be renewed every 3 years. I’ve never been asked to have an assessment, but I did do one voluntarily as I wanted to use hand controls, and the assessment meant I could try different types to see which I preferred. The people who did it were very friendly & supportive, and the whole assessment really boosted my confidence - they weren’t looking to try & fail me to stop me getting a licence.
And you should tell your insurance company as well, as failure to disclose may invalidate your insurance. They can’t increase your premium though. If they do attempt it, tell them that’s discrimination & they’re legally not allowed to.
Hope that reassures you, but if you’ve got any other questions then ask away.
Dan

I completed the DVLA form and sent off to them and received a letter back saying that they were writing to my Neurologist but they had noticed that I had multiple issues so could I complete another form. They didnt give any clue as to what this was and I had included everyting on the first form so I completed another form with my type 2 Diabetes and a coverring letter asking for clarification. Not heard anythng back yet but i have also notified my car Insurere about the MS diagnosis ad they merely recorded on my record that I had let them know and their advice was to follow thge Doctors and DVLA advice.
