Diagnosis in my sixties

Hi, I feel like a bit of a fraud as I don’t have a diagnosis and I don’t think my symptoms are anywhere near as bad as I read about here. But they are happening and changing and my doctor has put me forward for (another) head MRI. My question is, if anyone has any thoughts about it, am I too old for a diagnosis of MS? I’m 62, and it seems that everyone starts getting symptoms/tested so much younger than I have! Thinking back, I wonder if various things were actually indicators but I’ve never been a going to the doctor person and I’d just battle through - I was also a florist for 25 years and put things down to the physicality and conditions of the job. Then I changed jobs, had an awful manager and was signed off by my doctor with anxiety and she also started the ball rolling with tests. Has anyone else been diagnosed at a later stage? Obviously I also look at other conditions - no-one wants MS after all - but I keep coming back to it as my symptoms are so classic even if they aren’t debilitating. Thanks so much for reading!

I was 66 (now 74) when I was diagnosed. I’d had a few very minor symptoms before that but it was my walking that precipated the diagnosis

Best of luck on your journey and keep positive.

Hi Fred. No, you’re most certainly not too old, you never are for anything. If something’s not right, it’s always worth getting it checked. Being sent for an MRI can only be a good thing.

One thing that I do know for sure is that your loved ones will never thank you for dodging the doctor if something could have been aleiviated sooner.

Keep your chin up mate.

All the best.

Jon.

Hi

I was diagnosed last year with RRMS at 53. No obvious symptoms but looking back there were various signs that I can now say pointed to MS but I just put them down to getting older or being heavier than I should be. It took me feeling ‘not quite right’ on a Friday afternoon to make me go to A & E with what I felt was a suspected stroke which ended up with me being in hospital and getting diagnosed with ms eventually. I am no expert but I would say that age shouldn’t matter and probably your gp would be your best starting point. Make a note of all symptoms however small and insignificant you think as it might be.

Take care

Well, that’s a bit of a shocker for you. I hope that you get some clarity soon about what is going on. There isn’t a good time for an MS dx, but I must say that I’ve been grateful to have been dx at 38 rather than 18 - at least one has a chance to establish oneself in the adult world and feel invincible for a while longer. I’m 63 now, and I still think that.

Hi there, as I understand it a diagnosis of MS in your 60s is unusual to rare but yes it does happen including in mid 60s. However, try not to self diagnose!

MS symptoms are generally not specific to MS and could be a result of various other conditions. You say ‘another MRI’ are you happy to say how long ago your previous one was and what, if anything, it revealed.
