I hope I’m posting this in the correct forum. I am currently in the process of applying for life insurance and critical illness cover. I do not suffer from MS or have any symptoms but my Dad Has MS. Can anyone advise me of any insurance companies that would cover MS in my critical illness cover? So far I haven been able to find one.
Hi, I was with a company called Hamilltons. They cover all “nasties” in their cover. Im a little confused as to why other insurance companies dont cover critical illness, most companies have critical life cover as an option, MS is usually on the list of whats deemed as critical illness, unless they have now removed it which would surprise me to be honest. You will pay more, but it is given with your life cover as an add on you arrange with them. Good luck Tracey
I am guessing that the OP means that he can’t get cover for MS because of family history. When I tried to get cover in 2008 I couldn’t for MS as had an episode of pins and needles in my feet in 1996 and my Mum is PPMS.
The MS society have an advice web page on critical illness, it might help to point you in the right direction. My Dad had been diagnosed with Parkinsons when I took mine out, & Mum had womb cancer although thankfully it was treatable. My insurance paid out when I had my MS diagnosis years later, I believe Nationwide are very good as well. Good luck Tracey
I’m not sure what the situation would be if your father had been dx’d with m.s. but he hadn’t told you.
Some time ago there was a message from someone who had taken out CI Cover - at the time he took the Policy out he had been dx’d with m.s. but crucially he hadn’t been told of the dx. I think his case went to court and he won.
A friend took out CI Cover and when asked about his parents medical history he said he didn’t know any details as he had been abandoned by them and his grandmother brought him up.
The important thing is that you have to be scrupulously honest because these companies check meticulously before paying out. (If a question about a family member having m.s. is not asked then I don’t see why you should mention it)
My insurance company did not ask about family history of illness, I was paid out as soon as contacted them & gave them proof of my dx. Unless stated, they are only asking about your health history, not your family. When I applied I was honest, I didnt have problems, except arthritis & at the time it wasnt deemed as critical illness. For anyone whose circumstances make them non-standard (as in your case, with a dicey FH,) it can be well worth consulting an insurance broker. They know the business.
