I was told on 18th December that I was going on Copaxone and thought great at last something that might help, as I have never been on a DMT before, however it was delivered today and now I am terrified. Its not the injections that scare me as I have never been scared of needles but it is the fact I have 2 very young children in the house. Don’t get me wrong I will do everything in my power to make sure they know why I am doing this but I don’t want them to think it is okay to stick a needle in them. I took a very bad fall last week and my wee boy was crying when he saw my big black eye and scars on my face. I know I can’t hide it from them as I live in a bungalow and my kids can open the bathroom door from the outside (a safety feature we put in so they couldn’t get stuck), Has anyone else been in this situation and can you offer any advice.
I did my Copaxone injections at night just before bed. I brushed my teeth, put my PJs on, grabbed my warm pack as I found warming the area first made it less itchy afterwards and jabbed myself once I was in bed. Only takes 2 secs and I kept my week’s supply of needles and my sharps container in my bedside drawer. Copaxone can stay out of the fridge for a week by the way…
I am sure you could buy a kid safe lock for your bedside table (one used for a kitchen drawer would do) and because you are in bed and the kids are asleep you won’t be disturbed. Is that a possibility for you?
I’m on copaxone and I have a wee 7 year old son. Val is correct, kids are more relaxed and settled about things than we often think and give them credit for. My wee boy had seen me suffering with relapses and i sat him down and explained how the copaxone is to help me with my MS and he sat with me when the copaxone nurse visited and talked about the meds, I chose to involve him in it all, explaining all the way, not sure if your kids are younger, but I feel that I did the right thing with my son, he’s comfortable with it all.
Keep relaxed and positive about tit all and your kids with pick up on that
Thanks everyone, I feel a bit more relaxed now. My wee boy is 6 and understands everything about MS and relapses etc but my wee girl is only 22 months and is into everything. Luckily she can’t get into the fridge but I think when I start the injections I will just need to get up before her in the morning, luckily she is a very good sleeper and doesn’t usually get up till after 8am so looks like lots of early starts for me till she is older and I can expain it to her…
you’ll soon have it as part of your routine, like brushing your teeth.
your son sounds a lot like my eldest when he was that age. amazing how they can take in information that we find difficult. they just need to process it in their own way. my jack would have been cool.
happy jabbing!
ps make sure that your skin is in good condition on the injection sites
