hi i had my mri scan last week WITHOUT contrast or brain and cervical spine. Was told scan would be 40 minutes but only ended up 30 minutes which I guess is a good sign. gp mentioned MS in referral, but neurologist said my symptoms don’t sound like ms, and besides hyper reflxes my consult was “essentially normal”. the neuro doesn’t accept films so was told to pick them up and take them personally in 3 months at my follow up appointment. I assume i would have received a call by now from the radiologist clinic if anything was amiss. but i have to know now if anything showed, or else I’m going to be fixating on this for the next 3 months.
the envelope says not to be opened by patient with a sticker over the opening.
has anyone ever opened their results. i can hold it up to the light there are films and i’m guessing the report in there.
i’d just rather put all this behind me now, rather than having to guess and think about this for 3 more months.
any advice much appreciated.

what if your neuro considers the film to be contaminated because you opened it?
i really don’t think you should.
put it to the back of your mind and wait the 3 months.
at least you have christmas to take your mind off it.

Hi, I know that the consultants etc will all work differently but I got my results from my gp first with a follow up letter from my neurologist later. She was able to access the results online. I would find it very difficult not to want to open something for that length of time. Must be torture. My suggestion would be to take it along to your gp and ask him or her to open it . They might not be able to tell you everything in the report or even a full diagnosis but he or she will be able to give you a general gist of the MRI.

that’s a great suggestion. thanks daffodils. they asked for a copy of the report to go to my gp, but don’t know if he will ask to see me if everything is fine. i’ll wait a few more days and perhaps make an appointment at the end of the week.
also i’m guessing because the neuro requested the mri without contrast he is certain nothing will be found. are lesions still viewable or must contrast be used to see them? the mri was only 15 minutes on brain and then 15 minutes on c spine

I had two MRI’s like yourself without contrast. Nothing was found to suggest ms. I really don’t know why some are taken with and some without contrast. Maybe someone else here will know. My neurologist doesnt see me until the new year but has referred me in any case to a physiotherapist and opthalmologist at the local hospital. Been told I have nerve damage but the cause at this time is unknown.
